Faraway
At a loose end at the mo' so I thought I'd kick off with the box art and all the little bits and bobs, that will go to make this nice little ship. I thought it might make a change to a 'Flower'. That's about it, except I couldn't resist this close up, Bens 3D printing is superb. I'll start in January, meanwhile I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and an even better New Year. See you all in '23 Jon 18
ColonelKrypton
What an interesting looking project and all of those wee tiny 3D printed bits. I don't know if I could mange those but I am sure you will manage just fine. Perhaps one day I will have to try my hand a kit with such tiny 3D printed bits, nothing ventured, nothing gained. cheers, Graham Almost forgot, Seasons best wishes. cheers, Graham 1

Ngantek
Looks like a cracking kit and a great subject. As you say a bit less ubiquitous than the flowers.

You’re a cruel, cruel man Bertie. 😉 However, I already have a plan,I’ll probably use 0.1mm wire. Although, I might get away with stretchy line, as the mast and yards are brass, so are a lot less flexible than plastic. Have a splendid Christmas, see you in ‘23. TonyOD
Wow. Got to say, it's a privilege to have a build like this on the GB roster. Glad to have you along, Jon.

Hoppy
Looks good , I'm not sure if you're aware the original is preserved in Williamstown Victoria. The Maritime Trust of Australia preserves her and their website has many photographs of her in wartime service and postwar and preserved state. Hopefully these will help your build . Faraway
@Hoppy Thanks for the link, lots of useful info on it. And interestingly they feature this very kit. Jon
Faraway
While I'm waiting for the 7th to come around, I thought I'd make the base, I don't think I'm jumping the gun as I'm not actually building the ship. So, I've cut a piece of 2x1 oak. And drilled the holes for the brass rod. Now the scary bit, for me anyway, drill the holes in the hull. Brass rod in place. Quick check and phew, it lines up. Coat of varnish and name plate applied. I've checked my paint stock and very surprisingly I have all the right colours. NARN22 will be on the hull and superstructure, NARN36 on the hull along with NARN42. Black C02 will be the boot topping and various bits and pieces, and NARN44 will probably go on there bridge deck. The paint instructions call for G10 for the deck which is NARN21, I'm not sure of this, as I have two other greys for deck paint NARN23 and NARN54 (if you read this Jamie I would value your comments @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies) Anyway, that's it for now. I'll go and sit on my hands until the 7th and try and try and get rid of this cold and cough that I seem to have caught from somewhere. Lastly @TonyOD I hope I've not broken the rules posting this babble. I hope you all had a good Christmas and have a splendid New Year. Happy New Year. That's an elegant way to display a floaty thing, for sure.

I’ve done the same on a few of my ships, it’s cheap and easy and displayed like this, means I don’t have to add ‘weathering’ to the ship, which I feel only needs doing if mounted in a ‘sea base’. Bertie McBoatface
Smart looking base Jon. Elegant and simple so it won't detract from the model.
dnl42
I'm so very impressed by Black Cat's kits. And your building does them proud! That's my typical ship base style too. I usually make a scrap wood version for construction.

So nice to NOT have to add aftermarket parts to increase detail. Same here, I have a wooden ‘paint & make’ base. Jon
Faraway
@TonyOD Am I right to call this thread my WIP ? If so, then this is the start of my build, bit early in the morning, but have you seen the weather out there ? First thing I always do, is drill out the scuttles. I've cut out the planking, it will need some holes to correspond with the location holes on the deck. Also, you can see that I've opened up the slots in the rear deck gunwales. Not sure what they are called, but someone will know. I've dry fitted the major deck fittings. This also gives me a guide as to where to drill holes for the location of 'Bobs Buckles' to attach the rigging. Now, the first bit of actual assembly. The propeller shafts, supports and rudder. The supports and rudder are 3D printed and the shafts are brass rod. Now, the first paint. The boot topping over which I've added masking tape, which I've since straightened up.

Bertie McBoatface
I was awake at 5:30, up at 6:30 and at the bench at 7:30 (ish). How does an old man get so excited about playing with his toys? p.s. I have managed to fit in three cuppas, two breakfasts and two dogwalks so far.
