He-51 from Silverwing

Hallo

Now this is after a long brake with resin kits my first since a very long time.

I built two kits of this He-51 in the past.

One from Classic Airframe and another from Roden.

Today I have a better kit. This time in scale 1/32.

Since I live in Vienna, I intend to build the aircraft from JG.223 3. Staffel from Vienna in 1938.

After getting out all parts, I cleaned them in a proper way.

So that they are actually ready for use.

I had to notice, that some parts are missing.

This is a bitter moment.

The most disappointing missing part is the entry hatch.

So, depending on Silverwing, I wrote a mail already, I will have to build it in scratch.

I do not have any literature about this type.

No detail shots.

All I have is like a ragpicker I went through the web. I found some nice photos.

So therefore the call for you, if you have detail photos or drawings from this type, let me know.

The catch with the rigging of the plane is the same as I saw it in all other kits before. Nothing new.

My question are basically the interior and the rigging technique.

I assume it could be equivalent to the Gladiator by using flat metal as rigging material by itself.

So far for today with some pictures.

Good to see this being built, I too have one to make at some time in the future so I’ll be keeping an eye on your progress. Shame about the missing parts, I had some missing from my Gauntlet, but Simon and the team at Silver Wings soon sent some replacements. I’m afraid I don’t have any extra information, the He 51 isn’t a very well known type.
I’ll look in my kit to see what you are missing and post a photo of it, perhaps you can scratch build it?

Hallo, thanks to @Mattlow, he gave me the original manual as a pdf. So I can give you a short overview about the He-51 C! I am building an unknown version. Maybe a B? no one knows. One obvious difference is, that the C version has a simplified control steeriung for the elevator. Just one push-rod instead of four push rods as the kit shows! Many other details you m,ay see here. I show you just these, which I think are relevant for the modeller and may answer a lot of FAQ's anyway.

So, I think it is enough.

What is important:

The manuals says, that the interior alu-steel tubes are painted silver!

Exterior color RLM 63.

The dash board on early versions A, B are RLM 63 or grey silver!

Late ones dark!

At the left is the throttle.

At the right side wall is the triming for the elevator and the crank for the landing flaps.

On the right side under the oxygen bottle is the spring and mechnical mnechanism for the flap.

At the rear of the seat is a storrage room. This box is from birch plywood.

Rigging is done with profile steel wire. Tension blocks are under the skin! Opening just for the wire.

The profile on top of the main wheel fairing is a quick fastener system. No step!

All exhaust pipes are fixed together with one small strip of stell close to the opening.

Just a short overview.

Happy modelling

P.S.: Good news, Simon reacted because of missing parts. We will see...

Well, the quality differs from the kit # you have. This is kit number one from 32 scale. It was a reissue and I got it one year ago. Yo can not compare it with a Tiger Moth, a new kit of course. I have this kit also to build.

Hallo

Again some steps further.

The missing interior parts I did in scratch.

In all, the quality of the resin interior parts is far away from a good quality.

As you can see, a round piping material is a polygon cuboid, instead of a circular cylinder.

On the other hand I hardly could define the parts as shown in the instruction.

The resin material was like this all over for all small parts, and somewhere without knowing any of my parts.

Which one?

It was just luck to identify my elevator control quadrant for the right side.

And the funny molded hand crank for landing flaps.

The assembling was a nightmare, but I did not invest too much energy on such a kit.

It is a waste of energy.

I will build my model with open hatch, since I have none. Maybe Simon can mail me this missing part sometime.

This build is not to jubilate and having joy, it is much more a burden!

Some details in the kit are in contradiction to the real aircraft.

It would be interesting to know, which was the basic drawing for creating this model.

As a point of disappointment is to mention the control surfaces at the ailerons and specially the linkage of them.

This linkage is at the outer end of the trim tap and the inner side of the aileron.

I have holes in the trim tap.

Maybe a cast problem?

And a nowhere where the linkage lever had to go.

According to drawings, the linkage lever sits at the very end of the trim tap and goes to the hinge of the aileron.

It’s a great pity that your build is turning into a bit of a slog. I know there was quite a lot of demand for Silver Wings to reissue some of their OOP kits and I can only assume that the moulds were rather “tired”.

The frames and all other parts in my original issue kit look very much up to the usual excellent Silver Wings standard:

Despite this set back I’m sure you’ll still produce a super He 51!

If you look at your parts:

As an engineer I would make the sidewalls different: The casting bottom is the bottom of the real part.

This would prohibit damage on the highly visible sector of the frame.

The rods you show, do you really know where the real end of these part is?

The framework knot, where the cross girder joins, is this area already flat or still round? If it is still round what means the measure in the instruction? Guessing all over!

There are so many flappy details which shows to me a lot.

Hallo

After a break at holydays I am here again.

Everything is ready for getting on the paint job.

Masking is required now.

I intend to use a base color before getting on the final paint job.

Also to have a chance to repair irregularities on the surface.

Whatever shows up.

The alignment of parts is full of surprises.

Major error occurs at the wheels.

Here the axle is too far forward, so that the wheels never can turn.

The cut out at the underside is too far backward.

Repair as far as possible I did.

But it is absolutly in vain to overcome this big displacement.

The orientation of the wheel covers by using pin and holes from the kit are turned inward and looks like a cripple!

To build on superb model you need definitly two kits.

This is not my philosophy of modelling.

So I will not buy any aditional kit and build as next my Tiger Moth from Silverwing, to get rid off this kits.

Hallo

My disappointment could not be even one inch taller.

I tried to mask my model to prevent the use of this extraordinary decals.

But the surface of this resin made it impossible.

Finally I had to remove the paint and spray it once again.

The use of these decals is not possible.

They brake. As you see. I used lukewarm water only. No chance.

I am so made because of the lousy quality.

Lousy control if all parts are really in the box, even big parts.

They were not.

The hatch is the biggest part I miss and many others smaller one.

And now the decals.

This is definitely no recommendation for this company. It is a real disappointment.

Simon will cast a new hatch for me, but as it looks like I will never use it!

I am sooo mad, that I would like to throw this model out of the window!

Really mad about the lousy quality!

Oh dear, things really aren’t good with your He 51, as you say, what a disappointment! Silver Wings are normally so good, I don’t understand what has happened with yours.

Hallo

This is called a lack of uniform quality.

Out of carelessness, sloppiness or just to make a lot of money quickly.

That has nothing to do with fair ecconomy when so many things occur at once.

I gave up!

The second decal from the kit side of the red / white tail decal is stiff as carton.

Not to bend at all.

The red color in such athickness, that it can simple not work.

However, this decals are anything else as to use.

Roden decals are realy great in opposition to SilverWing decals!!!!!!

I can’t comment on Silver Wings decals because I always use masks that I make and spray my markings, it sounds like you may have some old ones? You are welcome to have mine if you wish to try again!

@galgos, this is too kind. But I switch to WNW and Lukgraph. Here I have Navy aircraft from WW1. In 32 scale and two in 48 scale. One is from Techmod.

i also will not touch my Toger Moth.

Spraying is usually my option too. On this resin surface I had the trouble, that the resin was full of different shades. It required more base color to get a nice surface. But it was not in proper quality,  since it came off when repositioning the tail mask!

So I had only the option for decals.
