SoftScience Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 My first completed project for this Group Build and first one over the finish line for 2023. Airfix's 1/48 Sea Fury built up as an aircraft flown No. 805 squadron of the Royal Australian Navy in the mid 1950s. On August 30th, 1955 this airplane was flown by Lieutenant John Bluett who shot down an unmanned runaway Auster Archer over Broken Bay, NSW. 52

PeterB Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 This is the old Hasegawa 1/72 kit of the Grumman F9F-8 Cougar, their first swept wing aircraft to enter production and essentially a conversion of their F9F Panther which had straight wings. A nice simple kit. I have used the kit decs for an F9F-8B flown by VF-81 who at that time were called the Crusaders, but later when equipped with the A4 Skyhawk they became VA-81 and shortly afterwards changed their name to the Sunliners. PeterB Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 (edited) This is my attempt at the old Emhar 1/72 F3H Demon. A slightly crude kit so I have used some etch and a resin nose. The white metal Aeroclub undercarriage was frankly worse than the kit one to my mind and I had to use the kit canopy which is probably not as accurate as the replacement vac-formed one I had intended to use, had it not been damaged. The panel lines are a bit like those on a matchbox kit but in the end it has come out fairly well. Here is the build thread. I have used aftermarket decs to finish it in the markings of VX-4 who flew it when testing various missile fits - in this case I think they are meant to be Sparrow I though they have a slightly blunt nose compared with the ones on my Cutlass and could just possibly be intended to be Sparrow II. It was one of the planes that suffered from poor engines and was underpowered, so McDonnell came up with both a twin engined version and one with a much more powerful single engine as the F3H-G/H which would be developed into the F4H Phantom II. The Demon was not a great success itself but it laid the foundations for a legend! Pete Edited February 7, 2023 by PeterB 39 1
PeterB Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 This is my 30 year old Fujimi 1.72 Cutlass which I have built like the Demon in the markings of VX-4 who used them to test the weapons fit. A complicated looking plane and not a great success, due in part to the same sort of engine problems suffered by the Demon and a number of other designs whilst the US aero engine industry was getting the hang of jets. Here is the build thread. Other than the nose leg and the slats it went together pretty well. Pete 38
JOCKNEY Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 Here's my Mach2 Republic Seabee. If the aircraft looks familiar it made an appearance in a James Bond film many years ago. Thanks for all the support and encouragement during the build I hope you like it. Cheers Pat 41
