Alconbury Recon. RF-4C Phantom, 68-564/AR, 1st TRS, 10th TRW, RAF Alconbury, early 80s

Recommended Posts

Finally finished, after a hiatus and a couple of other kits since starting this I felt like cracking on with it again. This is the 1/48 Italeri RF-4E kit; I used different tailplanes (unslotted for the RF-4C) and cut and filed down the jetpipes. Everything else I needed was included in the kit, certainly as far as I could tell anyway, though I may try and find some more accurate inner pylons. Strangely, two canopy windscreens are included but neither seem to fit properly! Again I’ll see if I can get another, otherwise I might fill the join. Apart from that I’m fairly happy with it.

Paint was Tamiya spray cans, AS-13, AS-14 (greens) and AS-15 (tan). I used aftermarket decals to depict the Phantom as it was at Alconbury in the early 80s, still in Vietnam-style camo but wrap around. I scratch built the canopy mirrors and fuselage aerials, plus a couple of extra cameras in the nose.

All comments, suggestions, Alconbury memories and banter warmly welcomed!

A beautiful result LR and well worth all the research and effort that went into it looking so authentic in the early 80s scheme. I spent many a happy hour (day) sat down Owl End watching F-4s, A-10s, F-5s and TR-1s taxiing out for take off. Great memories from a much missed airfield.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments chaps! It must have been brilliant seeing them at Alconbury, with the aggressor F-5s.

It was, and it was also noisy!!  Not forgetting the TR-1s too...

Rather spectacular.

Definitely saw 68-564 when I was a spotter.

Did the back end of Alconbury a few times, was always quiet when I was there.  Decent Airshows though.

Yes, their airshows were good (as were Wyton's during the same era) - if I can find them, I'll scan some photos I took there (remember 24 or 36 exposure films?!!)...

Remember 'em...as mentioned here before I have probably 35 films to be developed from the late '80's, early 90's, including Airshows in UK & Europe, spotting trips to Arizona & Texas....all on next years list of things to do...

@Mark72 it would be great to see those photos. I never did make it to Alconbury, it was too far from home and not ‘on the way’ enough for a stop on the way to childhood holidays in East Anglia. It must have been amazing, especially seeing the various visitors coming in to fight the Aggressors.

Thanks @Mikey-1980! I started with the dark green first, then masked that, sprayed the lighter green, then masked both before spraying the tan. I had to mix a little pot of tan to hand paint the canopy frames and any touch ups needed.
