Revell's 1:32 Vought F4U-1A Corsair (started)

Sturmovik

Recommended Posts

This Corsair came with me from the LHS last week. I also bought two Vallejo Model Color bottles (Dark Sea Blue and Intermediate Blue) so I can paint the aircraft as accurately as possible. Both paints were tested on a paint mule, and found out the paint applied over unprimed areas tended to lift if masked. That's why I'll be priming the entire model (something I don't usually do) in light grey, so I can then lay down the camouflage colours.

The kit is of the raised panel line style, unsurprising since this model was released in the 1970s. It's been reboxed multiple times until 2013, the printing date of the kit's decals. There aren't a lot of parts, and some of them have a bit of flash, but nothing a sharp scalpel can't solve.

I'm aiming to start on this one after December 22 of this year (hopefully).

Edit: Startes the kit yesterday. I just couldn't resist.

OK good luck with this one Sturmovik 🍀I had a lot of fun with this old kit couple of years ago. There's plenty of things to find fault with, esp in comparison to the Tamiya kit, of which there are so many builds and photo references online.

Whichever way you set about it, straight or revised with scratch build mods, there's plenty of scope for modelling, and you are STILL £100+ richer for getting the Revell box😎👍

I'll look forward to seeing you tackle it when the time comes

@corsaircorp you were the first one to come in! You have the front row.

@bigbadbadge will be built as is, no rescribing. Last time I tried my luck at it, I ended up with a mess.

@rob Lyttle thanks! My main modification will be to glue the wings in the extended position. I'll add some reinforcing strips on the inside of the union to make it stronger. The Tamiya kit, while nice, is WAY too expensive for me. And way more complicated.

  • Sturmovik changed the title to Revell's 1:32 Vought F4U-1A Corsair (starts on/after December 22)

Hello guys, I made some progress on the Corsair. In spite of being surrounded by exams. I started with the wings, knowing it would be the most difficult assembly of the kit. I glued them in the extended position, which shows how massive the Corsair's wings were.

And then I built up the engine.

I'll see if I can move forward a bit more with this kit. But tomorrow is exam day, so progress may be frozen until the end of next week.

Thanks for following!

Pushed forward with the Corsair just now by gluing the cockpit, fuselage halves, wings, horizontal stabilizers and cowling. The fuselage needed a spreader bar to widen it, otherwise I would have ended up with a big wingroot gap. I'll now leave the model to set before cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and painting the primer for the Vallejo paints.

All the best for the exams

Thanks! I just finished studying for tomorrow's exam. Then another exam this Friday. Most likely filling and sanding will be done that day.

Crikey that's very quick work and great progress

Thanks! Now I only need to let the model dry and I'll be able to fill the gaps. Hopefully I won't eliminate any of the raised panel lines.

A real "golden oldie", I built a couple of those in the nineties and revamped them sometime around 2008, not Tamiya but you end up with a Corasir shaped model in the end, I have a soft spot for these old Revell kits.

Cheers

Are ya ready kids?! I have painted the Corsair! The Vallejo colours were impressively easy to use. I first applied a coat of grey primer on the entire aircraft, and then applied the camouflage colours. Unlike the Revell Aqua colours, the Vallejo ones didn't need thinning, leaving a very smooth (but not glossy) surface. I'll let the paint cure overnight before glossing the model to prepare it for the decals.

Better photos with the wip model under the sunlight. The sharp eyed among you will notice the model is now shiny all over. That means it's time for decals, which will be applied tomorrow after I return from my second exam.

I really like these old Revell 1/32 scale kits.  Keep going 😀

Me too! Now, if I could find the most recent reboxing of the old 1:32 Bf 109F (actually a G-6), Spitfire Mk.Ia and Hurricane Mk.Ia (which needed to have the cannon barrels and bulges for them removed), I'd totally buy them!

The Corsair has been completed! Apart from some gaps (which were filled with CA), the right hand Star and Bar which refused to move, and almost losing one of the gear doors inside the model, I can say this was a very fun build.

The Corsair is a big aircraft! And now that I have the correct paints for the upper camouflage of US Pacific Theatre aircraft, I'll be able to build more of them, something I always wanted to do.

@bigbadbadge and @mullac2001 thanks! I have passed two exams. Only two more remain before I'm able to rest until March of 2023. That means I'll have free time for the January Fw 190/Ta 152 Groupbuild.

The Corsair has been completed. I'll link the RFI post as soon as I finish it.
