It's been a while, a combination of poor health and Mo and Jo having left the building . so a quick(?) simple build....

The pilchard season in Cornwall started around July and continued until October but sometimes went on until the New Year. The principal method of catching the huge shoals was seine netting. Two boats carried the nets.

The first boat (stop seiner) carried a net measuring 440 yds x 33 yards deep (400m x 30m). The second boat carried the tuck seine 160yds x 33yds (145m x 30m). A third boat called the lurker carried the Master Seiner who controlled the operation.

In West Cornwall because of the strength of the tides the nets had to be shot close inshore. The Lurkers position was performed by from the cliff top by the Huer. As the shoals were seen to be approaching the Huer used a long tin trumpet to call ‘ Heeva’ and the boats were launched.

From there the Huer directed operations using a form of semaphore code.

My intention is depict the Huer

My feeling is it will be neither quick, nor simple. But I’m thinking it will be outstanding.
It’s been many (many) years since I painted a figure, I love watching them come to life under the paint brush, and put them on a small diorama.

I shall be watching this with much interest.

Me too.

I blame the weather, can’t really have the heating on all that high, all day, so my work room gets a bit cold.

Update. Hull with a quick brush coat

P1120846

Working the bulkheads. Aft one to be the cut off. Mid to become seat. Pen gives scale

P1120847

Mid taken from drawings. Aft. Hard work to make an internal curve like this. Far simpler to break it  into three and work around. Basic will do in this case as its only to brace the cut off

P1120850

Et voila

P1120852

Ooops!

MO & Jo seem to be bouncing back, helped by the support and encouragement on here. I thought with the subject I'd be sent to the darkest corner :clif:

Hi Kev.

Not too bad here.  Temps are hovering around freezing 0°C.  Our big problem today is a weather system that's travelled all the way from California bringing freezing rain & some snow.   A nice day to stay indoors.

Cripes, less than a week after the off & he's already half finished. Done by Christmas will it be? Its a nice theme to build to & I'm sure it'll be another wee masterpiece. Do the Pilchards still run or did they fish them out?

Steve.

You know Kev its great to see you ‘grooving’ again, it’s just brilliant to see first steps like ‘plug ready’ and a superb piece of art on show. In that space of time I doubt if I could have found my glasses, made a cuppa, located my chair and then wondered where to find a plan. Brilliant progress, following closely, way to go m8!
