“Dassault on Precinct 13” Italeri Mirage 1/32

Recommended Posts

Wow, it's all looking magnificent Mirage now! Your use of Flory washes really makes the parts come alive.

Air fryers are great. I was prompted to buy one by the promise of "borrelhapjes" (Dutch, snacks taken with drinks, often fried) after sitting in far too many bars with my daughter when she was in college in NL. (Tower, 4L, Argos points, very happy with it)

Another great update, Jonhhy :) A fair bit of filler, but she's smoothing out very nicely. Hopefully not much more to do before it's time for the paint?

Looking tidy matey!

Can never quite seem to get the mojo up for modern jets myself, but this is certainly a good build to do so!

I don’t think she’s that modern but I know what you’re saying. Good fun if you ever feel the urge.

Nice....

Several times I've found that location lugs, pins and rebated edges are the CAUSE of a bad fit, as opposed to being the solution to a good fit.

Looks like you have the measure of that one on the tailpipe 👍

All in all this will be a great canvas for your next piece of fine art 🎨🧚‍♂️

Thanks. I do hope so. Proper chomping at the bit now. 🐴

can't wait to see the paint and moreover the weathering !!

29 Years !! Waow !! Congrats to you and Mrs Spad !!

I'm really glad for you 2....

Thanks CC. I’m looking forward to the paint too.  Gemma says thanks. 😀

A couple really great updates to read through since I was last here.  It's looking very fine.

It's not often I read about modeling and get hungry, but those dishes you shared look delicious. *drool*

Your pictures from the '90's really resonated with me.  I met my wife and we started dating toward the end of high school and were married in '96.  I think my hair was as long as yours was too (although mines even longer now 😛 ).  So congratulations to you and the Mrs. :D !

Ha! Thankyou kindly. That pick was from 94/95  my hair got shorter years ago. I think about growing it again sometimes but chicken out.  Glad you like the food too. 😇

Ciao

Thanks G almost time for you know what. 👨‍🎨

The air fryer is getting some real stick. Mainly from the kids.  But I’m shocked at how good it is. You know what they say about dental checks by your partner? “Abscess makes the heart grow fonder” 🦷🪥.   *sorry. 🧥

Great work Johnny, certainly is a big beastie,  do love the Airfryer too, makes the best fresh chips , give them a go, like they used to be done in the deep fryer back in the day.

Nice food updates too.

Thanks. Yeah we did some chips over Christmas. They were great. 🤩

Thanks. Not quite what I was expecting this build. I thought maybe the original cost meant a better fit. Seems not the case but it’s not to far a stretch to pull her back into line. 😇

Hey.

Please excuse the sporadic and long gaps between updates. Work has knocked it up a gear as has life. My old man is getting his knee op at last and I’m helping out and I’m trying to get fit so in between all that I get the odd bit of time at the bench. So mini update it is. 🤩🥳

The inside of the rear fuselage got painted. I think that’s a lot better than having that gaping hole. (You won’t see the bit at the back)

52657586538_06969ab1e5_b.jpg

Weathered and knocked back. Very subtle but it works for me. 🥸

52657539940_9d40356d65_b.jpg

I decided to add a bit more grit to the eyelet before fitting. I think that looks better.

52656607432_8e351f0086_b.jpg

And now for glue.  I know I didn’t paint the engine but really what would the point be. 👀

52657091011_9977f580a9_b.jpg

Looks good all in place with the home brewed bits.

52657572325_31aa3e10f8_b.jpg

Now time to fit the outer skin.

that sits really quite well now. I’ll have to do a bit of filling and sanding but not too much.

52656607447_556dfdc63c_b.jpg

Here she is side on. Should be easy to mask.

52657539930_7a385d4726_b.jpg

I’m happy with that. 🤩

time for lunch.

baked Miso aubergine with seared tofu and sriracha dip. 🤤

52657539970_265a80b162_b.jpg

paint soon dear friends. Paint soon.

Take care and have a splendid week.

You're talking like a darned beatnik now, Johnny 😎

I reckon with a dose of ipa you could get that dip a bit thinner and airbrush your tofu with it...... Maybe mask some camo patterns?

It may have been a smaller update than some of them, but progress is always good no matter how small an amount it is. And you should absolutely grow your hair back out :D

Absolutely (coming from a man who likes his steaks rare). Like anything, if it's done right it's fantastic. If it's not, don't let that put you off trying some that's been cooked well

Beautiful rendering of the heat scorched jet nozzle. I never noticed the odd eyelids-like design adopted on this plane for varying the exhaust exit area. With your finish, it looks to me like a piece of hardware taken from a Star War episode.

Excuse the radio silence. I have been crazy busy at work and at home. My old man had his date for a long awaited knee op a few days ago and I’m the main run around now he’s in. Knee’s all done but life is and continues to be a busy time. Not to mention stuff that’s going on in my own home.  Life is indeed an adventure.

on and off I have been whittling away at the mirage. Flicking back through the pics I’ve taken I figured it was time for an update. Not quite as far along as I’d like but getting there.  Plenty of lunch time action too. 😉 ( if you’re feeling hungry )

So anyway, plastic bothering.

I thought I was ready for paint. I was a little wrong. The elevators needed fitting or did they? 🤔 hmm decisions, decisions.

This however did need fixing.

52684817064_9299f9523c_b.jpg

Quite the hole in the fuselage that would be super visible if the elevators were slightly down which I’m planning on.

so how to blank off. Hmmm plasticard to the rescue.

52684017967_1e577912ee_b.jpg

This is a good technique if you have super thin card.  Now it would be good if I’d taken a finished pic but hey here’s one combined with the masked eyelet.

52684533961_815e2f3919_b.jpg

See there on the left. 🫠

Now do I paint the flaps separately or glue first???? Being lazy I’m gluing as I think waiting will make the weathering more difficult. Well that’s what I’m thinking so I’m sticking with it. 😋 there are three separate elevators that I’m going to position slightly dropped. A slight paint to glue so I’m glad I’m doing it now.

52684960065_968506ba2b_b.jpg

You can see in this shot how visible that big old hole would have been. Another slight failing for the kit if you want to position like this.

52684816584_ef9f9abdb7_b.jpg

Eager for paint I masked the wells with sponge. And realised that there were more pylons that needed gluing.

That middle section got added first.

52684534881_f9dcf08a17_b.jpg

By the way if anyone else is making this and are creating the “G” variant like me this little nibble does not need removing from the centre pylon. Luckily I had two.

52685032518_1b3342945c_b.jpg

While waiting for the flaps to dry I decided to make the ordinance. Sidewinders. 🐍

These things are huge.

52684019437_415c7c6dcd_b.jpg

But the detail is lovely.

52684959535_535349b891_b.jpg

One question and I think the answer is yes. Do I drill a hole in the rear? I only ask as I’m surprised they blanked it off.

52685032538_33759f59fb_b.jpg

Time for lunch. 😜

I know you’re all lovin’ the Tofu so here’s a play on an Egg mayo sandwich with beetroot salad.

52684817889_3bf9f942e0_b.jpg

munch!!!!! 😛

Now I didn’t realise but there were a lot of intakes and Ariel / fin things that really could do with going on now. I may regret this*

see the spine of the main fuselage. And the intakes in the middle.

52685032073_fab06e2e04_b.jpg

More intakes on the underside.  can you spot the difference from left to right.

52684534431_04b3d3bcd0_b.jpg

Another on the nose.

52684817899_bd3dbeed8b_b.jpg

They do add to the overall feel though which makes me happy.☺️

Getting closer to paint I spoon it by dropping TET on a flap. 🥹😬

52684018982_bc1163beab_b.jpg

left to dry and sanded with care bought an easy fix.

52684815979_9531d8a265_b.jpg

Unmasking the office so I can mask again more accurately showed the risk of sloppy taping. Notice the steps.

52684817839_3f4c68242d_b.jpg

Not hard to rectify but a pain non the less.

More lunch. 🤤

Roasted squash, cauliflower mash with toasted cashews.

52684817644_c21a1269d9_b.jpg

Now this was yummy.
Back to plastic! Hopeful for paint I attempted to mask the office more accurately. Alas this had to be fitted.

52684018977_6f3c75f312_b.jpg

And before that, painted. 😦

so.

masked.

52684017922_0316a7f6ae_b.jpg

And sprayed.

52685032543_0a323ee1a2_b.jpg

here from the inside.

52684019902_93a071928e_b.jpg

nice!
that shot was after a top coat and ready to be stuck on with my faithful Gators grip. Here we are taped from all angles to get a good fit.

52684018997_40edced571_b.jpg

Deploy Ze peg of justice!!!!

52684816504_16708eb6f9_b.jpg

That should do it. 😉

Now as a slight break from the norm I had to share this with you lot. Some of you might know that I have kept hens for the past few years and I’m sadly down to my last hen. Her name is “Chicken” 🙄

during the past few weeks every morning I take her down some treats and put her food and water out.  Not only do I have a hen to feed but she has a new friend.

52685032068_af329851a4_b.jpg

The same Robin, every day getting a little more friendly.

Here together.

52684958685_ec9d1a82d9_b.jpg

and even eating together.

52685034138_db59344ab1_b.jpg

new best friends. ❤️❤️
I haven’t had an egg from chicken for ages but look what happened.

52684817714_322e6559c5_b.jpg

Happy hen. 🐓🥚

Ok ok. Sorry back to plastic.

while the canopy dried I constructed more sun assemblies. These things are bigger than some of my 1/72 kits.

52685033988_4aef1c7615_b.jpg

Cleaned up and together.

52684018987_19bea40a96_b.jpg

Some of the ordinance however has location point issues.

52684533471_c1727b880c_b.jpg

So I chopped them off.

52684535246_0156d28a12_b.jpg

So now all the pylons are fitted.

52684959000_91c401a1e0_b.jpg

And here we are in a bit of a group shot.

52684958095_0c77c1a696_b.jpg

Today the pegs came off and I could see if the canopy had worked.

left. (Some gaps)

52684535016_f365b8a2d3_b.jpg

and right (slight step)

52685033058_8341e25c8b_b.jpg

But nothing some ppp and a little sanding won’t fix.

52685032083_fd79bd442d_b.jpg

And done.

52684533976_a9bb17e74d_b.jpg 52684817599_f14f193aa1_b.jpg

I can now mask ready for actual paint. Huzzah!!!!!

keep everything crossed for next week.

Thanks for being patient and sticking with this build. It’s slow but getting there.

a bit like my dads knee I guess. 😉😂

I need to catch up with BM too. Right what have you lot been up too? 😇

Take care and as always, happy modelling.

Johnny.

Finally! I was half expecting @giemme to pitch in halfway through with his tuppence worth!

By the way, how does the rear canopy fit? I had a similar kit many years ago and it located with pins between the fuselage halves to enable it to move. It had to fitted as the fuselage was closed up. I seem to recall I cut one of the lugs off and glued it later. Don't forget to mask it too!
