Dora Wings GeeBee First Flight ++Finished++

Recommended Posts

Since my bench is mostly empty and there's still a bit of time before my next planned GB starts in January, I thought I'd try to slip in another build

It's yet another racer with a habit of killing pilots

This was the kit I had originally planned to enter before the Bugatti arrived

Box and contents shots

Saturday

Not many parts, but the bag with the decals also contains PE :worry:  Fortunately there are paint masks for the colour scheme which should help

I'm planning to use this as a test bed for airbrushing with the Humbrol dropper-bottle acrylics 🤪

So far, I've sprayed primer on the sprues but ran out before the job was complete. I'm currently awaiting the arrival of a new can from Amazon

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I started on the model last weekend, with some prep, primer and paint

20221204_103358

Then started assembly of the cockpit, with the IP decalled and stuck on

Sunday

And everything else ready

Sunday

Attached the seatbelts

Sunday

The rest fought me all the way, with alignment issues, breakages, drops, and just not staying stuck. Fortunately the carpet monster was asleep during that period

Sunday

And it eventually got to this stage

2022-12-11 16.49.41

I'll need to do some touch-up work and keep my fingers crossed it'll go into the fuselage without self-destructing

The interior has been sprayed with Humbrol white.

No Idea if it's correct, but that's what it's got

Looks good but I wonder if the kit is based on a restored aircraft or reproduction ? I wouldn't think in the 1930’s that shoulder harnesses would be standard. I would think if was only lap belts at the time. Comparing to some contemporary military aircraft of the same period. Lap belts only were common into the early stages of the war in some types.

Lap belts for the period.

I reckon this is mot likely the case, but I was only following orders instructions m'lud 🧑‍⚖️

Anyway, I've been fettling away at the internals since the last post, and I got to this stage

2022-12-17 16.17.13

Some modelling skillz required

2022-12-17 16.17.06

In the absence of any reasonable amount of said skillz, I resorted to plastic butchery instead

Sun

I won't show you the details. It's not a pretty sight

Filler and further fettling needed, but it's better than when I started

Sun

~The engine went together reasonably well, but the sprue attachment points made clean-up a bit awkward

Sun

There's some reasonable detail. Paint and a wash should make it pop a bit

Sun

The rest of th eparts have been removed from the sprues ready for cleanup

Sun

Some parts need a bit more than the others

Sun

That's all for now

Certainly getting there, coming on well

Thanks Chris

A quick weekday update

After some more fettling and filling, she's mostly assembled

Build

A bit more filler and I still need to rig, then It's prime-time

Build

There are some versions of this kit which come with PE for the rigging. This is not one of those versions

Not sure yet whether I'll go with stretched sprue, plastic or brass rod, or thread.

Looking good .  I have been using Prym knitting in elastic which is Great and has a flat profile, it's great stuff and have used in all scales down to 72nd  as the further you stretch the thinner it gets.  Very cheap too and one 200 metre reel will last years.

Good luck with what ever you use.

The GeeBee has been in the paint shop today

First hit with the white primer from a rattlecan

(the rest of the bits are for my Kettenkraftrad and they were done in grey)

2022-12-27-10-19-48.jpg

Then sprayed with Humbrol white acylic (the dropper bottle stuff)

The engine was sprayed with Humbrol aluminium, and the prop was missed earlier so has just been primed
2022-12-27-16-39-17.jpg

I'll let that dry overnight then mask up for the red. Still undecided on how I will do the rigging

Good to see this one into the painting stages

Thanks Col. The apinting could get a little tricky

I applied the kit-supplied masks, hopefully in the correct places.

The instructions don't tell you which goes where, so it's (un)educated guesswork based on the decal application guide

2022-12-28-15-08-48.jpg

I'd started to fill in the remaining areas with tape when I remembered the pot of Copydex sitting in the cupboard
2022-12-28-15-08-59.jpg

That was all left to dry

I'm worried about paint seepage from the masks as they don't burnish well on the ribbed sections

To try to prevent that happening, I put on another thin coat of Humbrol white

Should get started in the red tomorrow

the masks certainly make life a bit easier. Can't wait to see the Red go on

Thanks Chris

I painted the red as carefully as i could

Humbrol crimson acrylic from a dropper bottle thinned with UMP thinner roughly 50/50

Started with light coats, spraying away from the masks

And after multiple thin coats, I think it's done

2022-12-29-15-05-44.jpg

I'll remove the masking later today 🤞

Wait no longer

But, talking of teasing, a little off-the-shoulder shot first

2022-12-29-19-14-21.jpg

And then the whole upper body. taking off a bit more than expected 🥴

2022-12-29-19-19-16.jpg

The paint is still looking good so far

2022-12-29-19-19-28.jpg

The bodywork isn't as sharp as it could have been but still much better than I'd feared

Overall, nothing that can't be fixed although unmasking the landing gear did throw one last spanner in the works :banghead:

20221229-192350.jpg

Ah well. some running repairs and a bit of paint touching-up

I'm happy with the result

You needed the strip tease music playing when you unmasked😉

Looking good and just needs minor touch ups and your golden.  Shame about the tail planes and undercarriage leg coming off too.  Although it's great progress and work. It's going to look fab .

Good result on painting the red. I think you were doomed on the fuselage with those thick longerons but the wings are excellent.

What did you think of the new Humbrol paint?

So far it's been fine. Thinned 50/50 seems to work well enough for spraying

I did have a problem with the 2nd round of red, but that was of my own making by not cleaning up properly

It's interesting that I have some bottles which have 2nd generation marked on the labels and some without
