jean Posted November 29, 2022 Posted November 29, 2022 Hi everyone, This is another model I am ashamed to still see on the shelf of so-called doom. Like the Etendard IV M of my other KUTA thread, it is very close to completion. A few photos to prove I sometimes tell the truth: Funny enough, and at the risk of repeating myself, I must be the only modeler in the known universe who did not find this kit a shake'n bake. Thanks for watching. JR 13
JOCKNEY Posted December 4, 2022 Posted December 4, 2022 Hi JR This one's nearly finished, could we see 2 completions from you in the Gallery in the same GB ? No pressure obviously Cheers Pat 5
jean Posted January 19, 2023 Author Posted January 19, 2023 Hi, a huge step forward! I have masked and glued the canopy and masked the radiator opening underneath! In short, I am ready for the primer. As I am short of white primer, I will use grey primer from a rattle can, and then only use white primer where the checkerboard decals are supposed to go. Hand to mouth modelling! Have fun. JR 8
jean Posted January 22, 2023 Author Posted January 22, 2023 Hi everyone, primer sprayed, areas to be covered by checkerboard decals masked, canopy framing painted interior green and black areas on tail painted and soon ready for masking. Then, the NMF painting will start. So it is moving, at long last! A photo to show the progress: Thanks for watching. JR 7
Grandboof Posted January 23, 2023 Posted January 23, 2023 Looking good . Glad to see that you aren't under pressure from Pat . Martin H 1 2
PhantomBigStu Posted January 23, 2023 Posted January 23, 2023 Party inspired me to get on with my stalled Hasegawa, doing BBD by the looks of it, my favorite mustang 2
jean Posted January 28, 2023 Author Posted January 28, 2023 Hi everyone, I decided to paint the wings in Tamiya silver leaf and the fuselage in Tamiya gloss aluminium. I am not 100% happy with the paint work, as my primer spray developed a slightly sandy appearance, and I should have been more militant with the sand papering afterward. Nobody died and hopefully it won't be too obvious. So this evening I will unwrap it all. Surprise! Then gloss varnish (I would rather not on NMF, but I do not want the decals to turn yellow with age) anti-glare panel, and decals. As always during a KUTA, I ask myself why I let this kit all alone in its box for so long... Have fun. JR 4
Jinxman Posted January 28, 2023 Posted January 28, 2023 Here comes the scary part - unmasking +NMF - good luck. 1
jean Posted January 28, 2023 Author Posted January 28, 2023 Just now, Jinxman said: Here comes the scary part - unmasking +NMF - good luck. I have been trying very hard not to think about just that... Thanks a million for the moral booster. JR 3
jean Posted January 28, 2023 Author Posted January 28, 2023 Well, despite some worries, all went perfectly well and the masks were removed without any NMF paint lifting. A huge sigh of relief was heard across the bush! Here is a photo of the progress: The white areas will underlie the checkerboard decals. Thanks for watching. JR 5
Jinxman Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 Yes! Fingers now uncrossed, and I can do some more modelling myself... 2
PhantomBigStu Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 Fingers crossed with the decals, been there twice with that scheme using checkerboard decals made for other kits where they've gone wrong, Hopefully Tamiya did their job with them. 1

Hi Stu, Inch Allah! these decals are all split in panels, so yes, the slightest distortion will stick out like a sore thumb. I will cross that bridge then. I am presently struggling with the OD anti-glare panel. I think I should have used enamel paint instead of Tamiya paint... Just a waste of time I could well do without... Almost at the decal stage. Looking forward to it. Cheers JR

Just checking if I need to get those fingers crossed again - I was hoping to do a bit of rubbing down on the Lightning later?
jean Posted February 1, 2023 Author Posted February 1, 2023 Hi Jinxman, Yes, permission granted to keep your fingers uncrossed and rubbing allowed. Considering the fluidity of the Tamiya paint with flow improver, I am happy with the result on the anti-glare panel. The few smudges on the white paint will be under the checkerboard decal. In my experience, Cartograph decals are not see-through and rather top quality. Just a couple of panels to paint in different NMF hues, and we'll be good for clear gloss varnish. I'll shout if I do need these fingers of yours! Have fun! JR 1
jean Posted February 3, 2023 Author Posted February 3, 2023 Hi everyone, Painting almost finished (wheel wells to paint...). I started on the decals and I am happy with the way the nose checkerboard is behaving. This checkerboard is split in four panels, which provides a ton of opportunities to stuff up. I have put two panels and they fit perfectly. Two to go... Hopefully the decals will be all done by the end of the weekend... Here is a photo of the progress to date: PS: Sorry for the poor photo. The bulb of my desk lamp just blew and it was the last one... Photo taken with one hand while I holding a torch with the other one... High tech in Africa! Have fun JR 2
Jinxman Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Impressive - I knew crossing my toes as well would have the desired effect. 😝 1
Grandboof Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 Looking good . Nice work with the decals Martin H 1
jean Posted February 4, 2023 Author Posted February 4, 2023 Thanks guys for your comments. So far, the decals are a real pleasure. I have done over half of the decaling and no nasty surprise... I just have to keep my own clumsiness in check! The aerial mast has been the first collateral victim, but I am still scratching my head as to why I ever glued it when I did... Microsurgery at a later stage. Have a good day JR
jean Posted February 5, 2023 Author Posted February 5, 2023 Hi everyone, Decaling still ongoing! It takes ages, what with the main decals being in pieces to adjust to each other, others to overlay, etc. I can't imagine the nightmare if the decals were dodgy! Thankfully, they are great and do not create any issue. But it is going to take a couple more days to put them all. Then the finish line will be in sight. Here is a progress photo. Thanks for watching. JR 5
jean Posted February 15, 2023 Author Posted February 15, 2023 Hi, with the exception of a small handful of microscopic decals, I believe the main decaling is over. And I am happy with the result. All that is required now is to go over the decals with a fine-tooth comb and deal with a few air bubbles, folds, etc. Then another coat of gloss varnish, etc... So getting closer to the finish line. The decals were a mission and I had to wait quite a while for them to be fully dry before the following ones could be installed. Having said that, they behaved flawlessly. When all is said and done, what a beautiful paint scheme this is. Here are a couple of photos to show you the progress. Thanks for watching. Have fun. JR 4
Jinxman Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 That looks every inch the Mustang - almost there!
