And also another Airfix German Armoured Car ++Finished++

Recommended Posts

Allrighty

Since I'm on a bit of a roll, and this was sitting close to the bench I thought I'd pop in a quick nostalgia build

The Airfix (almost) SdKfz 234

222

It's one of the longer-term denizens of the stash (which only sprang into existence around 20 years back)

This is to be an OOB build, same as in my yoof. I will not be correcting the Arifix errors

Sprues 'n' decs

222

Slap-it-together build will follow soon(ish)

It will indeed:

On with the build

23 Nov

I did some clean up and drilled out the barrel to improve the look a bit.

23 Nov

Hull assembly in progress

The front armour on the gun barrel is too far forward. The instructions were vague

Need to fix it

23 Nov

Hull mostly done. Some of the parts fit is atrocious :headbang:

23 Nov

Nearly there, but there's a problem. I seem to have lost one of the wheel hubs

23 Nov

A quick scratched replacement from some moulding offcuts

23 Nov

I think Hans needs to see the doctor. 😷 That's a nasty looking protuberance

23 Nov

And almost ready for primer. There's a few bits still in need of more scraping with a scalpel 🔪

More soon(ish)

/P

Very true. Before I got a set of craft knives, mostly is was token scraping with emery boards or a nail file

Anyhoo, in a day of firsts, I sprayed VMA panzer grey unthinned using my new Iwata HP-CS

Then, I was about to get the blutack blobs on when I thought "hang on a mo" 💡

I got that Molotow liquid masking pen to try. May as well use it on this. No great loss if it doesnt work

So

25 Nov

Blobs of mask later, I sprayed VMA olive green

25 Nov

Left that to dry for a bit then attempted to remove the masking

It doesn't really want to lift 😧

25 Nov

Rubbing with blutack or a finger shifts some of it but is damaging the paint

I'll leave the paint a bit longer to cure then try again with various things, otherwise, It'll be Plan B

Nice to see another of these old clunkers. I think it looks good in Olive Drab. 😀

I have never used it again.

I'll run a few more experiments with the Molotow, but it wasn't for shifting off this model. I may end up feeling the same way

Still, if I can empty and clean up the pen, it could be used for paint

Thanks. I thought so too, but since the Tamiya build will be just plain grey, I thought I'd mess around with plan B(lutack)

Undercoated with something from VMA resembling Dunlkengelb then blobs and sausages applied and sprayed with Olivegrun

Left to dry for a bit before daubing Copydex randonly

25 Nov

After that had cured, I sprayed with Rotbraun

25 Nov

Finally, stripped off all of the masking

25 Nov

'tain't too bad

Now, the crew need to be painted like I would've done in the 70's

And this really reminds me of my youth, building these 1/76 scale kits in an afternoon...Nice work on the camo.

I have masking fluid.  Used it once.  It's tape, blu-tac, or nothing.

Just tried some Vallejo masking fluid - looks similar to the Mig stuff but it actually seems to work as it rubbed off fairly easily. Not sure how it would cope with things like canopies/turrets with guns sticking out though as it is not always easy to get in the "rub" it off - being sort of rubber Maskol is easier I suspect, though I use tape for that sort of thing sometimes.

Thanks everyone

For now, I'll stick with tape, Blutack and Copydex

Anyhoo

Gloss coated and ready for decals transfers

Did a quick pin was in the some of the panel lines

26 Nov

This could take ....errrr.... a while :giggle:

And stuck on

26 Nov

I'll let the Decal Fix set, then a top coat to seal 'em in.

I may try some oil weathering if I have time tomorrow

Is it best to matt coat first?

Allrighty,

I sprayed a matt coat on and let it dry then made some blobs of oils on the model

2022-11-27-11-34-00.jpg

Then I went over the blobs with a brush and some odourless thinners

2022-11-27-11-44-11.jpg

It needs to dry off
