Its been a busy weekend, but we found time to carry out a decalfit on the proposed 1:72nd scale E-7A Wedgetail in RAF livery. The kit MT72-24 will hopefully be released in the next few weeks and we as ever are taking advanced orders with payment on dispatch.

Welsh Models have already released a 1/144 version of the Wedgetail (what a stupid name!) which I have and is very good. Densil assures me that when the serial numbers are known, he will resissue a decal sheet to those that have bought the kit - unless of course the serial number really will be WT001!

I did not know about the  Aussie bird so must revise my views on the name. I  thought it might be some daft name dreamed upby Boeing like Rivet Joint - which is even dafter! I FAR prefer names like Osprey, Goshawk, Falcon and Harrier!

Wedge-tailed eagles (or "wedgies", if you want to sound really Orrstrayan), also have exceptional long-distance vision... which, given the aircraft's role, I suspect was one of the reasons why the RAAF named the plane why they did.  And not because wedgies are also fond of eating carrion or carrying-off small household pets...

Mind you, if we wanted a truly terrifying name to strike fear into the hearts of our enemies, it'd have been a toss-up between "Chipmunk" and "Puss Moth", surely?  Or "Fawn"?  😉

The wedge-tailed eagle (Aquila audax) is the largest bird of prey in the continent of Australia.

Am I correct in the assumption the RAAF were the 1st operators of the type?

Yes you are correct, the Royal Australian Air Force was the first operator - in fact the aircraft was developed specifically for us and has become a world beater 5th Gen AEW platform. I started out in the Project AIR 5077 "Wedgetail" Office in Canberra back in 1995 and am immensely proud of the E-7A Wedgetail.
