shortCummins
For my next build I’ve selected Eduard’s 1:48 P-51D “finless” Mustang. This is a “weekend” version so no PE or resin included however there are 4 different schemes to choose from. This is the scheme I’ve decided on, who wouldn’t want a boxing Donald Duck as nose art? Apart from "Donald" I want to have another attempt at a NMF airframe, I'll get it right eventually, along with some invasion stripes. I think the supplied decals are the “peelable” ones?, anyhow it’ll be interesting to see how they work on a “metal” finish? As there is no PE supplied I’ve opted to use the Quinta Studio interior 3D decal set… …this set includes both instrument panel(s) and seat belts. I may get some Brassin resin wheels… …depending on how the kit supplied version builds up and when Hannants get them back in stock. Next, as normal, I’ll be starting on the cockpit. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
One of my favourite parts of any build is identifying which pieces can be removed from the sprue, what “sub-assemblies” can be built before painting and which parts can be painted whilst still attached to the sprue. So, sub-assemblies assembled, various parts were separated from the sprue, superglued to cocktail sticks and then given a coat of Mr Surfacer 1500 black primer. The seat is as good as any resin version I’ve seen. Next I’ll be adding “base” colours to the cockpit. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)

Chris that it is Chris some time ago I built Tamiya's 1:48 version and "so far" I've got to say the Eduard kit, with one exception, is hear and shoulders above the earlier Tamiya version. The only place that the Tamiya kit betters the Eduard is the "top cowl", Tamiya has this as a separate piece while Eduard has it as part of the fuselage halves. I can foresee loss of detail and then re-scribing and re-riveting along that join, having said that I not got that far in the build so it might not be too much of an issue? On their earlier Spitfire kits Eduard have created a separate "top cowl" that they've "dropped" for the newer MkI, MkII and MkV versions, perhaps there's a manufacturing reason?, it can't be down to cost as I'd have thought it would have cost more or less the same to create an extra piece? anyhow, so far I've been blown away be the cockpit detail, the seat is almost as good as resin and the side-walls are separate so should help with deal painting. rgds John(shortCummins)
shortCummins
The main cockpit colour is interior green, for this I used a mix of approx. 90% MrColor 351 zinc chromate type 1 and 10% MRP-77 NATO black. the detail for these side-walls is first class, there are additional boxes and controls still to be added! For the rear wheel well, it was painted with MrColor 352 chromate yellow. “interior” metal colour was painted with Xtreme Metal AK478 white aluminium, the radiator was painted with Xtreme Metal AK476 steel. The separate “radio” pieces were given a coat of MRP-77 NATO black. Next, I’ll be adding detail paint to the cockpit. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)

81-er
Not sure how I've missed this one, but you're progressing well, John I've yet to get a Mustang in the stash, but I can certainly see me being tempted to get the Eduard one from what I'm seeing so far James

I’d like to do one in 1/32 but all the decals available use the wrong colours for the legend. If you continue at the present rate you’ll be finished before Christmas. (this one) and £15.60, there's another version due towards the end of the month available for pre-order at £19.08, any of these are a real bargain. 5 hours ago, Biggles87 said: Me neither. ‘Happy Jack’s Go Buggy’ is probably my favourite Mustang scheme. shortCummins
To start the detail paint for the cockpit I decided to have a go at the cockpit floor. The floor, on the real thing, was made from plywood, covered with a “non-slip” paint, black paint mixed with a gritty sand to give some extra "grip". After a period of time this paint surface would be worn away to reveal the wood underneath. I’ve no idea if this will be visible once the cockpit is closed however I think it's a nice exercise to try and replicate? So after the piece had been given a coat of MrSurfacer 1500 black primer, certain areas were given a coat of the interior green mix… …the green was then masked and MRP-259 pale wood used as a base colour for the wood… …once dry I applied some Uschi wood grain decals (off cuts from one of my “naked” builds)… …the rear part of the cockpit floor “wood” was only applied around the edges as the base (fuel tank?) of the radio area will cover most of it. The “wood” was given a protective layer of aqua gloss before I applied some liquid mask, with a sponge, to simulate foot wear, MRP-77 NATO black, “highlighted” with MRP-59 RLM 66, was then used for the non-slip surface… …the “worn” areas, where the pilots feet would have worn it away, were then revealed by rubbing off the liquid mask using a 1500 grit sanding stick, this also gave the impression of “slightly worn” scrapes. As I say, I’m not sure if this will be visible but I think it was an interesting thing to do. Next, I’ll continue with the detail painting for the cockpit. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
rob Lyttle
Looking like a good kit, and meticulous work so far 👍 No doubt the Weekend range is great value (and less of a fiddly pain for the likes of me....) I feel the urge to ask the obvious, John, which everyone probably knows... What is Finless about this 'un⁉️ I'm supposing that you are going for a paint solution for the bare metal?

Graham Boak
No strake, yes. Not really "fin"less, but a case of "fin"more on the later ones. As long as they get the shape right a minor terminology problem is forgivable.

I've always thought of it as a "dorsal fin" added to later variants to help improve directional stability caused by the lowered fuselage when the bubble canopy was added rather than the faired cockpit of the earlier B's
shortCummins
Various dials, leavers and other parts were picked-out in different acrylic colours including: vallejo 70.995 - German grey 70.918 - ivory (throttle and “base” for red lever, canopy release?) 70.957 - flat red 70.940 - saddle red (head rest) 70.986 - deck tan (transmitter/receiver lead) mig 191 - steel The side-walls built and attached to the fuselage sides… Seat “worn”… Next, I’ll be finishing building and weathering the cockpit. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)

shortCummins
After a coat of Xtreme Metal AK478 white aluminium the latitudinal ribs were masked and MrColor 352 chromate yellow applied. Front and rear pieces were sightly “bent” I started by glueing the centre… …and working my way out, waiting for the glue to dry before fixing the next part… …front and back pieces fitted. There are eleven pieces that make up the longitudinal ribs that were painted with AK478 and fitted in place. Attached to the lower wing. Next, I’ll be finishing the wings. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
