Mercedes-Benz 1628s Tractor and Low Loader

Recommended Posts

Hi all, this was my second build over in Revell Classic GB, again the subject is the kit I like so much, Revell's 1628s tractor unit.

For this build I used this particular 1982 boxing.

Originally, my plan was to build this as a beavertail truck, but then I went a little bigger and decided to scratch build a Low Loader, to be pulled by the tractor unit. So I actually built the tractor as it came in the box, and only added KFS resin rims and hubs, some flashing lights and I scratch built a hydraulic tank for it.

The build log is here:

The paint is Alclad Dark Alu over Tamiya Semi Gloss Black chassis. I decided to not weather the unit this time, which I'm sure some people will appreciate (you know who you are ). The story on this one is that it's a brand new combination which the Van Dordt company has just added to the roster.

Here's some pics of the tractor unit. You will perhaps note a new backdrop, this is not a photo guys, this is actual wood. I cut some (a lot, in fact) small slats and glued them on thin multiplex. I sprayed everything black and then got a small tester of acrylic wall paint, with a small roller in it, and went over the black. Thicker in some places, thinner in others. Looks pretty much like the side of an old equipment shed, which is exactly the point 🙂 ... I'll probably add some washes and such in the future, but it's fine for now. The whole thing is about 70 centimeters wide, and you'll see later on why I needed something that large!

And here's the loader I built. It's 45 centimeters from one end to the other and I can tell you it took some primer.

As you can see we kind of went with the black theme here. I think it looks darn nice. Took quite a bit of plastic to build, too. The wheels are KFS trailer wheels, the smaller ones. The ratchet straps are also KFS items, they're great.

The ramps originally moved, but now the chrome paint is just a little too thick and it gets damaged. I could have used alu tube but I didn't have it. I may change that in the future... probably not. Looks nice though.

Those wheels are really nice as well.

An impression of the underside. I didn't do any wiring except for the hydraulic lines on the rams.

The king pin slides nicely into the fifth wheel, which was slighty "enhanced", i.e. cut, to make that fit.

So here's the rig, just turning off the yard to pick up its first load. Yes, it takes up a fair bit of shelf space.

A bit dark under here, but you can see the whole thing rests comfortably on the fifth wheel. Landing legs are retracted.

Excellent built, good to see it hasn't got dirty yet too ;)

With all those trucks you've built I can only assume you have lots of available shelf space, much more than me at any rate.

Thanks Spiny, well, available space is going down fast with models like this, I can tell you that!

It's a bit clean and shiny isn't it?

🤣

That's another really cracking build Jeroen, I really like the colour scheme and that trailer is brilliant - excellent scratchbuilding!

Top modelling again!

Hi Joroen,

This is certainly a sharp looking rig and trailer - great finish on all! and against your backdrop it really looks the part! Beautiful job on the scratchwork on the trailer.  The little bit of color on the ratchet straps, reflecting tape and lights looks nice against the black.

Looking forward to seeing your "shorty" tanker truck!

Cheers

Nick

On the bright side, that trailer does at least provide space for you to park a car on ;)

Correct! It's designed to hold the chassis truck.

A rare thing on BM these days 😉, nevertheless what a pleasure for the eyes such a silvery shiny and trustworthy old Mercedes Benz is 🥰

The „shed“ is looking good too 👍

🤔 Put a flat-bed on that one, then convert an Italeri Transit to a flat bed and put a car on it - you could save space by multi-stacking your models :)
