Bozothenutter
Delving into the depths of the R-1820 has me thinking the kit engine is wrong(ish) It's supposed to be a -22, which has the sparkplug wire ring behind the push rods and the shallow front (sump?) Most period pics and a lot of restorations show this. Most of the pics of a 'deep sump' engine show the sparkplug wire ring in front of the pushrods. Did AM mix'n'match details? Roger Holden
The front HT conduit came shortly before WW2 to make maintenance easier. The 'sump' is the item between the 2 bottom cylinders; not sure if that's what you mean. The bulge on the front of the engine is the reduction gear housing ( sometimes known as the 'nose casing' by Americans). If it's very shallow, then it indicates a direct-drive engine with no reduction gearing, which was used on earlier engines before the power output became too great and the prop speed had to be geared down to maintain prop efficiency. Likely AM copied a warbird engine, or used a wartime engine from one of their other kits to save a few pennies. 1
Bozothenutter
Apparently most of the survivors have a -55 fitted.
