The Battleship 'Dunkerque' by HobbyBoss 1/350

Good grief Jon, I turn my attention away for five seconds and look what's happened - there's a battleship half built! Well, possibly not half way just yet . 😁

You've made a good start though and I'll follow more diligently now I've latched on.

I've reached the stage where the parts being fitted and prepared are small, so progress doesn't really show.

There'll be lots of railings to add soon.

And today is a bit of a landmark, I've managed to reach 70 years.

So Happy Birthday to me

I suggested to my wife that perhaps she could get me a model to add to the stash.........

And.......

I've had a quick look and all the parts are there. I think it will stretch my skills, but that will be for another day.

Gidday Jon, HAPPY BIRTHDAY. 🙂 I'm just over four years behind you - I only LOOK like I'm 75. 😁 Congrats for reaching such a significant milestone and well done Mrs Faraway for such a thoughtful gift.

       Regards, Jeff.

Thanks Bertie.

I’m going to have to really take a deep breath before starting the paddle tug. And for once actually STUDY the instructions. They could be better.

But still a way to go with Dunkerque.

Thanks Jeff. Since I retired five years ago, years have just sort of merged together. Often I have no idea what day it is.

I think the plan with the paddle tug, is to keep me locked away. 😉 It’s going to be a challenge.

Nice work on that breakwater.  I can imagine all sorts of different ways for that to go messily wrong.

Thanks. I was surprised how well it went, I didn’t even loose any of the uprights.
Which was a first, normally with little bits of PE, I spend hours searching the other dimension which is the floor under my bench.

Happy birthday Jon and may there be many more.

Dunkerque is looking good. I always thought the French had some very nice looking warships, the Italians too.

As for that paddle wheel tug - that does look like a very interesting build. It must be on the small side in 1/144 scale, maybe not in length but wee tiny detail bits. I look forward to seeing how you get along with this one.

cheers, Graham

Thanks Graham.

Dunkerque is slowly coming together.

The paddler is 220mm long so not so bad, but it does have quite a lot of small resin bits, some not so well moulded, so will be a bit of a challenge.

I've been plodding on, the bridge is on and some wires between the arms(?)

So now I'm starting to add the railings, which so far are behaving themselves.

Probably shouldn't have said that.

Apologies for the lack of progress photos, but I keep forgetting to take them.

I think that's collectively known as the rotary clothes dryer?

.   .   .  known in Australia as a 'Hill's Hoist'. 😀 I dunno how the crew would hang their dhobying (laundry) on the outer wires though. 😲

Err, Bertie and I will see ourselves out. 😁 Regards, Jeff.

They could stand on the funnel and lean across. Or have I got the scale wrong?

My next task, or trial, depending on your skill level. Is to bend this stair/ladder, I think it might be called a companion way (?).

p?i=c18338321d9255f8c6325f5654c4b3e1

There's one on the other side as well.............

And much to my surprise IT FITS.......

p?i=0fd3f9b298ee4731d5d143baa5faa150

It did actually fall to pieces, which made it much easier to bend and locate. Just need to fine tune it.

I do admit that I didn't bend the steps to the horizontal, sorry.

On to the railings, these went on ok and now await the wooden top railing.

p?i=7faa4d348b35807e65c882b0271a262b

And here it is a wooden hand rail.

p?i=0bb6e5019cf2141a4bb8e5cbb27df1ad

Which went on a lot better than I thought it would. Luckily, I managed to get the curve on the railing just right AND first time.

First off, excellent work, as always.

But 17 days?!:gobsmacked:

Thanks.

It seems longer......

I will try to keep a log of hours spent building on the next one, I reckon maybe I do four or five hours during a build day, but not everyday.
Sometimes life gets in the way.
It all depends on how it goes and the size of the bits, PE takes longer which puts more strain on the ageing joints AND tires the old eyeballs more.

And of course I’m lucky that work doesn’t get in the way.

You are good with the brass now aren't you?

According to my references a companionway is a stair connecting different decks on a merchant ship. A companion is a hole in a warship's deck designed to let light and air 'downstairs' and normally covered by a skylight.

I think what you've just built is a gangway ladder.

My brass/PE work is improving, but still has its faults.

I did wonder if I used the right term, I think you are right.
