mouse808
 Hi all, is it ok to do a WIP of a Liberator I downloaded from thingyverse? I'm building this for a friend who loves Blake's 7 So its this one https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1622169 I've scaled to 66%  Plan to have some LED's wired up, but am not looking forward to the panel painting/masking 😱 Right I've a bunch of bits (testing the filler primer on one of them) Also I didn't have any green filament so I went with clear and sprayed with tamiya clear green

Hunter Rose
Nice! Really like the liberator, will be following with interest
mouse808
Ok this seem to be the best resolution shot I can find, a screen grab of a youtube vid. I think I'll work from this. I'm never going to be able to do that panelling justice. Going to have to learn how to make decals too. All good fun
mouse808
Really need to see if I can get a better finish that doesn't show the 3d print layers (oh for a resin printer) So I gave my test piece some wet & dry + white primer and Halfords white gloss. (oh and a little test of the gold bit, seems ok?) Â
Mike
The shape looks good, and I'd be up for one if they could be printed without all the layer lines inherent with FDM deposition printing, and all the sanding work that entails. Could it be printed by stereolithography to achieve a smoother finish? mouse808
I'm lead to believe you can print with ABS and do a vapour bath with an FDM printer for smoothing, but you need an enclosure (something else on the todo list). The resin printers use stereolithography I think. Oooo amazon has one for less than £200. Must. Not. Buy.

mouse808
Right hopefully back in the room on this, filler primer and gloss coat on   Not perfect, but for a 1st attempt I'm happy I had to do some work with the main section to get all the electronics in. Oh yes, the globe is remote control I've mixed up a very light and slightly darker grey for the panelling, I think it will be an overall cleaner version, as there doesn't seem to be much white on the original Also got some brass rod for the antennae(?) primed and painted

mouse808
Oh dear, my panelling isn't going to be great and I'm running out of time 1st idea was this, but I've scrapped that  Now trying layers like this  So white, mask, dark grey, mask, un-peel 1st masks, then mid grey, which makes the white go light grey (check all the bits of masking @ the bottom of cutting board) Arh, I've not taken a photo of that, whoops. Anyhow I've 3 weeks left to finish it 😱
mouse808
Couldn't resist the gold last night and a quick test fit Its looks too clean, but I've no idea how to "weather" it? (still not happy with the panels, in retrospec some pre-shading might have been a good idea?) (it hasn't got that blue tint IRL) Edited February 7, 2023 by mouse808
John_W
I remember Matt Irvine writing in Scale Models magazine about people complaining kits didn't match the studio models. He said none of the Liberator models he built for the series matched each other anyway, differ dimensions, different colours, and there was no "definitive" Liberator. Mike
Sorry to butt into this thread, but I just bobbed in to see Liberator stuff - I initially thought it was going to be a B-24, but the Liberator from Blakes 7 is also good   I noticed that the pics were loading a bit slowly though.  I tested some of the pics, and they were 3.3mb in size, which is huge when posting up on the internet. You should be aiming to save your files to around 200kb optimally, give or take a bit. To accomplish this, you can reduce the size of your pics, as anything over the recommended 1024 x 800 maximum we advise, it's wasted bandwidth and storage space useage. Most people view these pics on phones, tablets and 1080p screens, so huge photos of 4000 x 3000 px will have to be shrunk down by the forum software (load on the server and delay for the user), as well as the extra bandwidth that is uses up (10x what's necessary).  The downsides of this from a viewer's point of view is the waiting time before you can view the pics, and some people might get bored and click away. From the server's point of view, it's wasteful of bandwidth, storage size (we cache images to improve speed), and it's also wasteful of the server's resources, which means a slower experience for all of us.  This isn't meant as a "telling off" BTW, more of a bit of useful advice to help you as well as help us. If you can size your pics to the recommended limits, we'll be really happy, and so will the members
mouse808
Ooops sorry @Mike They're hosted on github which allows pretty much anything, including full size files. But you are quite right. One cmd line later  $ for image in *; do mogrify -resize 1024x800 $image; done Fixed, I'll make sure I do any new ones too.

mouse808
Yay, painted something other than grey (added some black rings too) Right now to try and colour match my home brew decals to those red bits
mouse808
ok my first decals too, lovin the learning curve To be fair this is the second set I printed, turns out inkscape defaults to 96dpi if you print direct, and I almost had a small disaster sealing them with a random can of varnish I had, which was acetone based 😱 I printed 2 just in case which was good as I already smudged one of the lines, and now sealed with GX100. They colour match much better in real life.

mouse808
Had to print a jig to get the spikes on/line up and it got stuck on the last one and had to be cut off! Â And getting some beading on the globe (more tricky than I thought too) Edited February 20, 2023 by mouse808 typo
Mike
That's looking good I'm going to wait until someone creates (or at least prints) a Liberator in SLA resin to cut down on the amount of sanding and print line reduction. It's a damn cool ship for the era though.
