Mach 2 1/72 Boeing 727-200

Yes, Mach 2 is a hard job, but you can solve it.

New decals are necessary, because the clear parts never clear.

As others have said, when you buy a Mach 2 kit you are going in with your eyes wide open and you certainly won’t be getting Tamiya quality. 
 

@Ad-4N the transparencies are indeed usually poor - I spent more time on the cockpit windows on the DC-8 I built than the rest of the kit. They did come up ok on the end, but it took sanding them back to almost wafer thickness to get them workable. I then decided to use decals anyway!

 

If the quality is the same as the DC-8 then this 727 will be ok. Yes, some work required and there will no doubt be some elements that leave you scratching your head but other options are limited. Kendal’s kit was really poor and left a lot to be desired (that’s if you can find one!) and Welsh Models won’t float many’s boat as it’s a vac. With some aftermarket decals I reckon a good example can be built. Watch this space.

Mach 2 kits are certainly not aimed at the shake and bake modeller, but they are a manufacturer that fills the gaps where other companies run a mile from. They are far from being unbuildable though.

So far, I've built their York, Britannia and Argosy, with the VC10 just started and a Comet sitting waiting in the wings. Granted, non have been easy, but all have been a challenge, but in a good way.

We should rejoice in the fact that Mach 2 actually fill these gaps where other manufacturers fear to tread and not just knocking everything they produce.

The way I look at it is;

a) Do I have a gap in my collection? Yes.

b) Could I scratch build it? No.

c) Do I mind putting a bit of work into a project? No.

In cases like this, Mach 2 kits are a God send for me and many others.

I hope I don't come across as being too harsh, but I feel very strongly about this subject. Mach 2 do their very best to provide us with the kits that we want. Granted they are not as refined as the likes of Tamiya or Hasegawa, but neither are their prices.

With a bit of gentle support and encouragement, we may all get the gaps in our collections filled over time.

I'm waiting patiently for a Handley Page Hastings. Rumour has it, they are interested in doing one in the next couple of years.Fingers crossed.

Must agree, the Argosy goes together rather well. Added to that I used a few aftermarket parts, 3D printed some wheels and Dart engine nacelles, John kindly gave me some Aeroclub props etc to enhance the thing. I've had several Mach 2s including the Comet, Argosy, Coleoptre, Valiant, BV-142, both Leducs, Sea Dart and Britannia and all have their good and bad points. The Britannia was the worst with badly warped centre fuselage halves and uneven wing root location stubs which wouldn't have mattered so much but the centre section was the one part I needed to use for an Argus conversion! Must agree that the 'clear' parts aren't the greatest and no two window openings seem to be the same shape, size or orientation.....but to be fair, most of us are aware of these shortcomings before buying.

I spoke with Didier a few years back about this, at that time he was not going to tread on Mel's toes, and Mel did in fact discuss letting Didier have is Hastings masters, though it came to nothing at the time. 'Not impossible' was Didier's words as a future project. I would have thought Mikro Mir might upscale their kit though.

Absolutely - and if we keep buying them we may get more of the lesser-kitted aircraft in the future as so eloquently put by @cngaero above. I'd love a Convair CV-880 or 990 one day in 1/72nd so I will most definitely support Monsieur Palix's efforts going forward. I have an AIM DC-7C conversion on the shelf of doom as we speak and predict even with Mach 2's reputation a 1/72nd DC-7 family is sure to be a good seller... and just imagine a Starliner!

 

And rest assured as soon as I get my grubby little mitts on a 727 I'll dive right in!

Never built a Mach 2 kit before. Anyone built the Viscount as that's one I keep thinking about picking up? Wonder if they'd consider a Herald too.

 

727 sounds interesting. I don't mind bashing kits into submission so that concept doesn't bother me at all.

Not too much problem with windows on that one! It is a great scheme, I like it.

I'm tempted. 

I've built the Mach 2 Atlantic and was quite pleased with the end result. The biggest problem with that kit was one fuselage half being longer than the other.

I built the Mach2 Falcon 20 kit many years ago. Awful... I have another which I will try one day - if I have the courage.

You could just graft on the whole nose from a BPK 737-200 or even a Heller 1/72 707 as all three aircraft used the same construction jigs to reduce costs.

Yes, I thought they would be the same.

 

I have not checked the BPK 737 yet, but the Heller 707 fuselage is much wider than the Welsh Models 737.

A 1/72 727 for around £70? Yes please! Price is very reasonable for such a large kit - this has made up my mind that one will be winging its way to me in due course.

That's one of my aircraft. OSRA and OSRB were the last 727s off the production line. They are still going strong. 

 

I will be building both OSRA and OSRB for the company. I can't say I'm looking forward to the kit, but with all the scratch building, it's going to be a big job anyway!!

I was surprised to see a BA liveried option as I thought this was type not operated by BA. A quick internet proved that I was not wrong. It's a Conair   Comair (South Africa) aircraft who use the BA branding.
