There are several still photos that were taken around the same time the Navy public relations team shot video of  O’Hare and Thach flying that day.  If you google it, I think you will find several great reference shots, especially ones that show the upper wings and how they weathered.  The aircraft paint faded and oxidized but you would probably not see  large areas of primer or bare metal, maybe scuffed through in high traffic areas.  Less is more
