Am really looking forward to Saturday now;  Hoping to meet a few BM'ers - you'll know who I am because I'll look like a science teacher on his day off.

I can see that going well....

"Hello, are you by any chance Jack roadkill on BM?"

"No. What made you think that?"

"Well you look like a science teacher on his day off".......

Will IPMS members be able to pick up their wristbands on the Friday? As per earlier years?

Here's what it says in the latest IPMS magazine:

If you are just dropping off items on the Friday [so you're not one of the four who are setting up on Friday - you're giving stuff to people who are] you will be able to obtain your general show admittance band from the desk on production of a valid and in-date membership card.

This is helpful, but it still leaves two things less clear than they could be:

1   Can you pick up a wristband even if you're not dropping anything off?  (How will anyone know?)

2   Is a "general show admittance" wristband different from a set-up one?  (I'm assuming it is, because of the colour-coding, and so anyone in this position will have to wait until 9am to get in on Saturday and Sunday, but at least they won't have to line up for their wristband.)

I'm sorry to say - because everything else is so well organised - that this whole business of picking up a wristband on Friday has never been made as clear as it needs to be.  Even the pre-show report in the magazine doesn't spell it out in full - and that's only just hit my doormat, three days before set-up begins.  It would be good to know the exact position soon, so I can tell my club members who are planning to come up on Friday.

Currently en route from Estonia

I think my first show was back in 1986 when it was known as the IPMS(UK) Nationals and held at Stoneleigh. By my reckoning, I have missed around 7-8 shows since then, including last year.....it was just too much of a faff with international air travel and COVID-19 etc. So this will be my first show since 2019 and my first as a SIG Leader....It's been a bit of a challenge organising our stand from afar but hopefully it will be "alright on the night" come Friday evening and we will be ready to greet friends and visitors alike !.  We are always on the lookout for new members of the Asian Air Arms SIG so stop by.....we will be adjacent to the spectacular Harrier SIG display commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Harrier Operations during the Falklands Conflict (which I am also involved with).

For newcomers, there is lots of sage advice from all of the previous co-respondents so I will not repeat any of this. Come along and enjoy yourself, ask lots of questions and watch some of the demos if you want to improve your skills.

See you there !

Seems to be getting later each year or is it just me thinking that.

It was actually creeping earlier over the years so it's gone back to closer to the 'old' time. It's also to help us separate the traders and their vehicles (setting up primarily from 1-4pm) from the club set-up crews (never going to be a perfect separation but it works reasonably well). We can manage the numbers in the exhibition halls better and that in turn means it's easier to clear the halls once we're past 7pm.

7pm is the last entry time for set-up and we will shut the halls down and turf everyone out at 7.30pm so we can hand the halls back to the centre no later than 8pm (and that means we have to have confirmed that no-one remains in the halls before then).

Thanks have to go to John and the rest of the Exec team, and all those others involved, to get us to a set up and consequential weekend that we all so enjoy. It must be a nightmare to organise, and I for one appreciate everyone's efforts. As a club rep (and a SIG rep) things seem to work well for folk like me.

As far as I know you can get your wrist band and register from 14.00 but entry to the halls to set up will not be until 16.00. This should mean there is less of a queue at 16.00 . Be that as it may I offer my usual heads up to all the stand donkeys as they converge on Telford on Friday. Heroes all🐝

Having been involved in the organisation what was then the IPMS Nats at Stoneleigh in the mid eighties, my hat off to the IPMS team that put it SMW together, it was daunting 38 years ago in a much smaller venue. It is never going to be perfect, as humans are involved, but it is still the bit of my modelling life I most look forward to. Hope to see some BM'ers there.

Very true, question for you Terry and anyone else:

for a newcomer, is there anything I should be aware of. Anything not to miss out on etc?

Ash

Look at the IPMS SMW site. Download the hall plans then work out where you want to go. The first time I went it blew my mind!!

Just beware - our floorplans are not 100% accurate. They are correct as of a specific date. We've had a small number of clubs and traders swap/move/expand in the last few days. Those changes are being recorded on the published trader and club display lists but NOT on the website plans (it's simply too much work to constantly update and change the plans on a daily basis and then re-publish them. The master plan is updated once a week).

The lists and plans in the Show Guide are 95% correct - we had to go to print on 31st October, so any changes after that are not recorded in the guide.

The most up to date floor plans will be the large paper plans pinned up near the entrances to each hall and the ones on the LCD screens in the foyer (and even those may have a couple of unexpected changes).

@John Tapsell,

is that unexpected in a good way, e.g. a new trader appearing, or unexpected in a " wow, I didn't expect them to drop out!! " bad way?

Thanks though for the update.

Looking through the trader list, I can't see any drop outs from last week or so, seems to be moving stuff around. From my limited experience of this stuff, it is a potential nightmare. Mrs T is aware I am getting excited. Car filled and checked, camera charged, and Tapas in Shrewsbury booked for tomorrow evening. We plan a visit to the National Memorial Arboretum on our way. Seems a fitting thing to do on the 11th.

Is there a meeting place?  How do we recognise fellow BMers?

They have three heads and ten arms.....and that's just Martian.

I will have my Britmodeller badge on the Ipswich table. Good chance I will be stuck behind it while everyone else mooches off.

I believe the standard operating procedure is to wear a red carnation in the button hole of your left lapel, carry a copy of yesterdays Times under your right arm and then use the correct code phrase about the weather in Moscow.

But that might only be for the cold war SIG members 😉

If you see a chap who looks a bit like this, just follow him around and you;ll meet many BM'ers - for it is the mighty Martian, or Martin to his friends and loved ones.

@Mr TThe National Memorial Arboretum does state on the website that they are closed at certain times during the Remembrance weekend, especially on 11th & 13th.

The Armistice Remembrance service on 11th starts at 10:30, but they do not state what time it is due to finish(!), all they state is that it reopens after the service finishes! Unless you have pre-booked tickets for this event, you may not be able to get in (depending on your journey time).
