If you really, really want to be at the door for 9am (IPMS members only at that point remember), it really depends on which way you come into Telford and where you try to park.

Coming off the M54 at Junction 5 and then looping back towards Asda and the Brown Elm or Cherry Pink car parks shouldn't have any delays. I'd strongly advise you take a good look at the online google (or similar) maps prior to arriving so that you understand the road layouts and exactly how to reach each car park - like any urban area it's very easy to get shifted into the wrong lane or take a wrong turn if you don't know the area.

The queues generally become an issue if you are arriving via Junction 4 of the M54 and want to park on-site at the venue. The route along Queen Elizabeth Ave and St Quentin Gate past Stafford Park (business/industrial estate) is the one that generally gets snarled up, but it can have a knock-on impact on other roads in the area.

Thanks for so much information all. Just to pick up on this, what kind of timings are sensible for parking early? To get in with the unwashed masses at 9am, do you need to be queueing at 8, say? When does driving a car into Telford become a long traffic jam?

Thanks again, everyone!

To answer your last point, from about 7am!!

Seriously, the way I come in, it isn't too bad - I take the dual carriageway from Bridgnorth, ignore the first exit for the centre which usually has a long queue, then take the next exit into Telford and sort of turn left and get into a big car park about 5 minutes walk to the centre without any traffic queue.

I leave home at about 7.30am and get to the admission queue at the centre about 20 to 9.

I am staying in Shrewsbury and so will come in from the other side and it is not too bad. I am tempted to get Mrs T to drop me off and hope that I don't buy any large kits.

I am planning to go with my 80yo Dad (who is not too mobile) for the first time: is it reasonable to fit everything into one day or should we try and plan for two?

Prob not so bothered about traders just looking at the builds and taking in the atmosphere! I normally go to the IPMS Belgium in Affligem...

I've never done 2 days, every other year I go for the weekend in the area with my partner who I feel wouldn't be too keen on both days so we go to local attractions (Ludlow and Ironbridge last year) and it's always on a Sunday purely to see the winning models etc and then onto the tables etc, traders are definitely not a priority. Tend to get there around 9.30 and stay until 3-4 and have a small snack and tea halfway before going onto finding a local place to eat before heading home. By the time early afternoon arrives we're tuckered so a cup of tea and a sit down to soak it all up so I guess not too far from what you want.

The highlight for me is the studying the competition entries and the tables/clubs, some are so imaginative and fun and the friendliness of complete strangers, guess that bit is easier as we have a common interest, just feels so comfortable being there if you get my drift

As far as I know there are no changes to the centre car park, probably still difficult to get into, and who knows what road works the council will spring on us!

Ermm... Are we talking about the International Centre car-park, here? I can assure folks that they do charge and it ain't cheap. I think I last paid around £8.00 to stop in the venue's car-park and that was 5 or 6 years ago.

If you use the numerous car-parks around the venue you should save more than a couple of quid on parking. I've read (but not experienced

it myself) that all-day, SUNDAY parking in ASDA's is £1.00. It's up the hill, about five minutes walk from SMW. If it's still true, you won't get it any cheaper than that...

Cheers.

Chris.

Asda changed their parking policy last year. You can no longer park all day. It's now limited parking. Can't remember the hours, but we tried parking there last year, only to find it had changed, but the signage had not been updated. We moved to the town parking just next to it down the hill. Price wise was the same, £1 all day Sunday. Don't know about Saturday pricing as I only attend on the Sunday.

(Edit: little bit of digging and it appears that it's now limited to 3 hours of parking at Asda)

I have never paid more than £4.50-£5.00 to park at the TIC since I started going again in 2017. Perhaps John Tapsell has an idea of likely car park charges for this year. It strikes me that car parking costs are something that people are going to have very different tolerance levels. The four cities that I have most experience of are all very expensive, to the extent that a day's parking for a fiver looks a massive bargain. The only advantage of getting older is that for trips into town are now free on the bus.

Cherry Pink car park is the closest of the council car parks and considerably cheaper than the TIC's.  And when I say close, I mean diagonally opposite the TIC, though the size of the TIC means you still have a 5 min walk to the show entrance door.

While it won't be suitable for everyone, don't forget that Telford's train station is about 15 mins walk from the TIC with a decent service between Birmingham and Shrewsbury.  Even on Sundays it's roughly hourly.

My memory of 2019 and 2021 was that the TIC was £5 for the day, which I though perfectly reasonable for a whole day's parking in a town centre, but I was worrying my memory was playing tricks on me...

Parking costs at Telford, irrespective of where you choose to go, is usually the least of your outgoings.

Once one gets into the halls and sees all those traders with all those kits then £5 or £10 for parking is nothing.

And talking of traders - any sign of the floorplan yet?

Just wondering.

Tru dat. I drove into Nottingham for the first time in a good while last week and I almost had a seizure when I saw what parking was going to cost me.

Whenever the wife and I want to go into London (very rare these days though!) we've driven to Hendon, parked in one of the side streets near the museum, and then got the Underground from Colindale. Whilst we could get the train from MK Central - we've found that it's much easier just to do that (plus I can make an excuse to go to Hannants shop as well!!!😆😇

That was one of the four cities I was talking about. Even more expensive than Leeds and on a par with Sheffield, provided, of course, that you can find somewhere to park. The only upside is that there are some reasonable Park and Rides, but not much help if you are going to more than one place.

@John Tapsell,

I looked at the trader list on the  IPMS SMW pages  last night and discovered that the link for Armory Models takes you to an Eastern European gambling site.

At least, that's what it looks like; I didn't click on any of the items on the page!

@Whofan I've just done a google search and found the website that way - web address matches up with what is on the IPMS site https://armorymodels.com

That gave me the confidence to click through from the IPMS site - gave me the correct site. Can you remember if there was anything different to the web address that you clicked on earlier today?

TOWN CAR PARKING - IMPORTANT

Telford Centre seems to have recently rebranded their car parks.  Cherry Pink is now 'Long Stay 1' and Brown Elm is 'Cinema and Restaurant Car Park'.  The signs on the car parks now have these names but some of the road signs still show the old names!

The good news is that the prices haven't changed. £4.50 for Saturday (long stay; both the above are) and £1 for Sunday. The first 10 mins is free, if you can manage a drop-off in that time.

I've just checked and it takes me to the correct site now.

I can't in honesty say the link looked different, but I'm hoping the company got what could have been a nasty hack.
