The Udvar-Hazy centre at Dulles Airport, Washington DC is the “displayable storage” facility of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The downtown museum reopens this autumn (fall) after a massive refurbishment.

Just a small selection below.

I was there back in 2016 on a 4 week holiday in the USA. Managed to fit in the National Museum of the USAF in Dayton, the Udvar-Hazy Centre, and the Flight Museum on the National Mall. Took several gigabytes worth of pictures! They were still refurbishing the HE-219 when I visited.

Great photos. Thanks for sharing! I really have to get there one day. Heinkel 219 looks fantastic, but what I'm really waiting for is Flak Bait going back together. As soon as they do that, I'm there!

I must admit I hope they don't repaint "Flakbait" - conserve it s there's no further deterioration but keep the original paintwork, much as they have done with the P-61.

As I understand it, that's the plan. To conserve the originality of the airframe. She's a pretty unique exhibit and she's been in bits for too many years. Hope Flak Bait comes back together before I flutter off this mortal coil!

I don't have a bucket-list, but if I did, that's on it.  Seeing all those late-war German projects (especially the Ho.229, He.335, He.219, Me.163 etc.) and some of those Japanese aircraft just had my mouth gaping, all of which I'd love to see along with some of the more esoteric American stuff

Great pics! Incredible museum, been there twice, wife had to pull me out both times after 2-3 hours. Now that the He 219 and Horton are on display, I will have to plan yet another visit!

In ‘83, I took a guided tour of the Paul Garber restoration facility outside of DC. Our tour guide, a retired US airmail pilot who flew in the 20’s -30’s let my buddies and I crawl around the Enola Gay when it was still partially disassembled and dusty. I remember seeing a Pogo VTOL, Goblin parasite aircraft and a mock-up of the Fat Man bomb in the same warehouse. Great memories.
