Darn it, another demo of how useful a cutter could be…. :D

Nice effect with the combination of pre-shading and marbling too Alistair.

Thanks very much. That is extremely kind of you.

The cutter is all Mark's fault but I can see it being very useful in the future.

The software is fairly easy to use from drawing your own shapes to tracing outlines from a jpeg and this was a nice easy intro with no difficult shapes to get in the right place.

Alistair

Alistair,

Lovely job on the masks - I'm still awaiting the correct media before I can get cracking with mine,

Thanks Roger,

I figured that a simple circle would be an easy place to start and the oramask was available on Amazon.

So managed to get on with it.

Looking forward to seeing what you can do with yours.

Alistair

Hi Alistair, just caught up on your build, and I have got to say she looks splendid dear chap.

Nice use of modern tech with the masks mate.

Stay safe.

Simon.

Thanks Simon,

It should pay for itself in aftermarket fairly quickly.

Sadly Alistair, we don`t have the space for one, nor a printer too, otherwise I would seriously think of getting one.

Simon.

Aye. Didn't think of that myself but thankfully it sits on top of the printer with a small footprint when not in use.

Nice work Alistair,  did you use the masks forcthe serial too?

Looks good fella.

Chris

Thanks Chris,

I managed to get the masks for the serial cut but the distance between the two ones was to small for the cutter so I put the decals on and removed the carrier film this morning.

They look ok not as good as paint but it was all I could do until I practice a bit more.

I don't blame you there Alistair,  was thinking the serials might be a step too far at this early stage.  Won't be long before you'll be expert at using the cutter etc.

Hhuuummmm  .... a cutter     think of all those roundels and serials painted instead of decals Steve

Alistair,

Looking superb! I had my first crack with the Portrait today and am now an expert 🤣 . I wonder whether you can resolve smaller details such as serials by spacing them further apart and then applying individually, rather than trying to achieve the whole lot in one mask? Or maybe even alternating digits (i.e. 2 masks for one serial?) I bet @mark.au has tried...

Thanks Roger, glad you're getting there as well you can keep me straight.

That's the plan for next time. I didn't have the font for this one so just used the scanned image.

I suppose I could just have edited the image but I'm not that sensible.

AliGauld—just catching up with this—amazing work!  Sorry if I missed it, what color did you use for Japanese himmaraus (sorry for the spelling)—best, Erwin

Thanks Erwin,

That is very kind of you.

The Hinomaru were painted with Mr Color IJN Aircraft Marking C385.

Hope that helps.

The main fuselage got a light Flory Dark Dirt Wash and then a couple of coats of Windsor & Newton Galeria Satin.

That's as much weathering as it's going to get as she was fresh off the carrier in the second wave so would have been looked after.

Looking great Alistair,  cracking paint and weathering.

Chris

Thanks Chris,

There is so much exquisite surface detail that I had to give it a light wash to try and pick it out.

Is it accurate to the real thing. Probably not but I'm happy with the finish.

Cheers,

Alistair
