Tamiya Mustang in progress.

Recommended Posts

After being bummed about trashing my last simple Bf109F-4 trop build near the end of completion, I got back to the bench with this Mustang. I picked another simple to build kit, a Tamiya 1/48. This time around I went with a little more challenging paint job. God willing it's gonna finish as "Berlin Express"
Other than adding a flat cockpit floor and gun blast tubes it's gonna be OOB. I'm really happy with it so far. The paint job should be fun.

Thanks all for your support.
Ron

  • Mycapt65 changed the title to Tamiya Mustang in progress.

Got a bit more done over the weekend. I'm pretty happy with it other than I think my anti glare demarcation line is too low and will not align properly with the train engine decal. I may have to ditch the "Berlin Express" scheme and do a similar scheme in generic markings. Hopefully today I'll get the black stripes on and figure out what to do with the anti-glare demarcation issue.

Here's a few more pictures of today's progress. The silver is Gunze Super Metallic 2 SM201. I'm loving this stuff. Shoots beautiful dry to the touch in a minute or two tops. I masked it for the OD, stripes and nose with regular hardware store delicate surface tape without issues. I'm really really loving the entire Gunze line of solvent based paints.

Excellent painting :)

Thanks. I'm not much into details. I pride myself on a good finish with no seams and proper geometry. My builds are meant to be solid two to three footers. At one model contests I heard one person describe one of my builds as, "ehh, it's just a good paint job" because I didn't open the carburetor intakes and detail the oil coolers on an monogram A-26. I've had other similar comments but half the people making them might have had buckles on their rudder pedal straps  but there painted surfaces were so coarse that you could use them as sandpaper. Or every flight surface and or gear was out of align.

More progress today. I painted the low vis insignias using AML vinyl masks. It was my first time using vinyl masks and found it difficult. Not sure if it was me or the product. I've decided the kit spinner is terrible as is. I'll either have to fix it or replace it. I'm not done with the flaps. I have yet to paint the ends.

Be well

Ron
