Sherman M4 early type

Recommended Posts

Now for the color. I have a question for the experts here. I know the tracklinks i use were full rubber so the they become rubber black but the conectors, were they painted in OD or just dark steel. I can only find color photo's of restored Shermans so it's hard to determine wich color to use. My guess is that they were a sort of worn OD with some specks of rust and bare dark steel on the edges. Any help would be great!

Hi Maddoxx,

Quite a job!!...once finished, it is worth the effort because of how well they look... I see you cut your thumb? Bad place for a small wound, when it happens to me, I can't wait for it to close so I can manipulate the small pieces...

Coming along nicely...🍿

Cheers and TC

Chipping started. I used the Ammo mig OD highlight color mixed with 1 drop of cremeweis and a drop of retarder.

All the basecolor chips are done with a 0/3 paintbrush. Next is the dark grey steel chips and the some rust stains here and there.

When all that is done i can start with the dust and some stains.

Did you get any closer? I was looking on twitter at footage from Overloon and the Sherman/Fireflys seemed to be darkened metal connectors. Although working restorations, I assume they kept very close to original.

I think i'm going for a panzer grey for the connectors. That works really well with the rust tones from lifecolor.

So, a bit more progress. All the stowage is done. Pinwashes, chipping and little dots of rust are done. Towing cable is placed as are the extra track links. Tracks are fitted and i have to say it was worth the efford.

Now it is time to focus on the bottom half of the model.

I started with some shading on the drivetrain.

In the coming days i'll repeat the oilfilter, chipping etc. Again to bring it all together. Then it's a light dusty finish ( no mud this time 😉 )

Anyway, here are the progress photo's

Tnx @FrancisGL it's getting there. Still some work to be done. I think i want to give the additional armour a bit more of a faded look to push the contrast a bit more. Also, i have to do the back and the complete drivetrain. But still enjoying this build. Tonight i have some time planned at the workbench. Time to bring out the oils again.

Hi Maddoxx,

It's a nice Sherman, it may not be very exact (Tamiya's fault, not yours...lol), but it sure looks like a Sherman, a sample rather than an oldie, you can get a great result.. .. I really like the used look, I might have "dirty" more the tracks and the running gear, but it is something subjective and personal taste, not a criticism. I hope to see those magnificent figures finished.

Tnx @FrancisGL looking at the photo i think the running gear and tracks could use a bit more dust. But i don't want to dirty it up too much.

So, i took the comment made by @FrancisGLto heart. Today i spent some time working on the tracks and running gear. I gave it a heavier dustcoat with some pigments and some light splatter effects.

It's always handy to have a cheap set of crayons in your stash.

After that i worked on the figures. That was fun! And they turned out descent.

In fact, i like em both so i placed both figures in and on the Sherman.

So now i'm calling this project finished.

Tomorow or friday i'll get my photo booth so then i'll start a thread in the RFI. For now here are some photo's of the complete model.

Hi Maddoxx,

Good trick with the chalks, I also have a similar set, although with as many pots of pigments as I have, I rarely use it... I see that you have the same metal palette of paints that I use, and the brush that you see in the photo, I have the same set (for Amazon watercolors....), lol....

On the other hand, very good figures, I like them a lot, and how well they do the model, they always give life and what matters most to me, a sense of scale, because at the moment of seeing a human next to a lot of "metal ", mental abstraction is achieved, even for the "uninitiated".... Thanks for following a piece of advice, I could be wrong, but it is something very subjective, where personal taste comes into play vs plausible appearance... Still, I don't think what he's added is exaggerating, and it looks IMHO plausible...

My M3s (Stuart and Lee), have a running gear and tracks very similar to your M4, if you see any photos of them, you will see what I was trying to point out, dusty, but without mud, metallic reflections with some grease... . As I said before to @Bullbasket, the important thing is that you feel comfortable with your work, if you also get something plausible or precise, then all the better... lol.

Cheers and TC
