TimJ
Dale Earnhardt, seven times Winston Cup champion, was best known for his uncompromising driving style and black Goodwrench sponsored cars but for the 1998 The Winston all star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway his car more a special one off livery of gold and black with additional sponsorship from Bass Pro Shops, a retailer of fishing, hunting and camping equipment. Unfortunately his race only lasted nine laps as, along with John Andretti he crashed out after skidding on some fluid dropped by the car of Darrell Waltrip. P1050844 by timothy jones, on Flickr I'm hoping that the decals will be OK but there were two sheets in the box so at least I have some spares if I need them. Corsairfoxfouruncle
Welcome with what is most definitely a special scheme. Considering the intimidator almost always drove black cars.
malpaso
Very nice. I imagine manufacturers could only dream of a full production run of 19,500 kits nowadays, let alone that as a limited edition!

vppelt68
These Monogram NASCAR kits are great builds, not at all intimidating! I have one on my shelf of shame...
TimJ
I've also got one on the shelf of shame, a Richard Petty Pontiac Grand Prix which might make an appearance in this year's KUTA. DSCF9581 by timothy jones, on Flickr Back to the Chevy and work has commenced on the engine. I did think that I'd lost the sump and inlet manifold but they turned up a couple of days ago. P1050913 by timothy jones, on Flickr The lower front panel has been fitted to the body and blended in with some filler. P1050914 by timothy jones, on Flickr More soon. TimJ
There hasn't been much progress since the last update but I've got the body primered. P1050988 by timothy jones, on Flickr After wet sanding the primer the inside of the body got a couple of coats of Rover Vermillion from a Halfords rattlecan to replicate the colour of the interior of Dale's car. P1050989 by timothy jones, on Flickr At this point I thought I'd try the decals, so I painted the bonnet/hood and tried the Bass Pro Shops logo, which broke up into several pieces. 😒 As I had a spare set in the kit I coated the other sheet with some liquid decal film and, after giving it time to dry, I tried again. This time it sat in the water for half an hour before it decided to come off the paper.... in several pieces. 🙄 So now I've got an aftermarket set on the way from Mike's Decals in the US. TimJ
I'm not sure how long it normally takes for stuff to arrive from the US but the decals I ordered at the beginning of November arrived yesterday. According to the tracking details on Royal Mail's website they were waiting to leave the US on 15th November and then there was nothing until December 22nd when they magically arrived in Brum so I can only assume that they spent a week or three at the airport. There was a point where I thought they'd got lost in the post so I was quite relieved when they turned up, especially as I'd ordered another couple of sheets for other kits. P1060158 by timothy jones, on Flickr There has been some progress on the kit in the meantime. The engine is finished and was painted in various metallic shades. It just needs to have the headers fitted. P1060104 by timothy jones, on Flickr The radiator has also been assembled, painted and given a black wash. P1060102 by timothy jones, on Flickr Finally or this update, the roll cage has been put together and is ready for paint. P1060101 by timothy jones, on Flickr With just over two weeks to go in this GB I don't know if this'll be finished in time to go in the Gallery but I'll do my best.
CliffB
I'm glad the decals turned up OK Tim. Good luck with getting this finished on time Cheers
busnproplinerfan
I have a few of Dale's cars built, this is one of them. I faintly remember this race. I used to be a Nasker fan back then, lost interest in it now. The drivers now I think are just their grand kids. This ones starting to look good. What gold will be used?

I used Tamiya TS-21 which looks close to the picture on the box. P1060178 by timothy jones, on Flickr The body needs a couple of areas touching up before a clear coat and decals, which I noticed were printed by Cartograf so they should go on OK. On the chassis front the rear suspension was assembled a week or so ago. P1060168 by timothy jones, on Flickr Since then it's been painted and fitted to the floor pan, along with the other suspension parts. P1060181 by timothy jones, on Flickr P1060180 by timothy jones, on Flickr The roll cage has had a few more bits of bracing added and has been painted. Unlike the earlier Monogram NASCAR kits this one has the roll cage padding moulded in so it was just a matter of giving it a coat of matt black. P1060179 by timothy jones, on Flickr With the two week extension I'm confident that I can get it finished in time for it to take its place in the Gallery.
busnproplinerfan
This gold looks better than the one I did. I used Testors gold. Is the chassis regular red? Maybe just my screen.

The instructions say to use Chey engine red or the chassis which I've always thought of as a red/orange shade. Mine might be a bit more orange than it should be but it looks close to the picture of the built up model on the side of the box. The seat has been painted and I risked using the kit decals on it. Luckily they only broke into three pieces each so they look OK from a distance. The seat belt decal was cut out and after the edges were painted black it was glued to the seat, which was then added to the chassis. The seam lines were removed from the headers which were painted and added to the engine. The engine is dry fitted, along wit the wheels. P1060186 by timothy jones, on Flickr As I had the body to hand it was time for a mock up. P1060185 by timothy jones, on Flickr Next steps will be gluing the engine in place and fitting the roll cage. busnproplinerfan
That might explain it, looks good against the gold. My cousin used to build these. He got lazy with making the chassis and just made two chassis, one grey, one red and just made the bodies. He had a lot, don't know what he did with all the leftover parts.
Col.
Nice progress Tim. The mock-up looks good and hopefully it won't be long before you're at that point for real.
TimJ
Thanks @Col.. There ha been more progress over the past week or so. The dashboard, fire extinguisher and mirror were added to the roll cage. It does seem odd to have the fire extinguisher behind the seat as I'd have thought it would be better somewhere more accessible. P1060188 by timothy jones, on Flickr The engine and propshaft were added next, along with the exhausts. P1060209 by timothy jones, on Flickr Then the roll cage and radiator were fitted to the chassis to finish it off . P1060208 by timothy jones, on Flickr With only the body left to finish it was given a couple of coats of clear ready for the decals. As I said in my previous post the Power Slide decals are printed by Cartograf and so far have gone on without any problems. A few of them seem slightly bigger than the kit decals but not enough to really notice. P1060210 by timothy jones, on Flickr There are still a few more decals to add, a few paint touch ups to do and the windows to add so it should be finished before the Gallery closes. For now here's another mock up as it is now. P1060211 by timothy jones, on Flickr Edited January 28, 2023 by TimJ

Ive watched waaaaay too many NASCAR races and learned too much over the years. Sadly yes that does include Dale’s last race. I can remember a time when a person could literally buy a car at a dealer and do the mods over a few weeks or months and enter any race. Now it takes 1/2 million just to build a car. Do you know how he earned the nickname the Intimidator ? He had his crew purposely weld extra tubing into the front right corner of his cars. He would use that corner to then bump his opponents until they got out of his way. If they didn't he’d just graze their rear enough to gain a bit of an edge to pass. There by intimidating them in future races. Edited January 28, 2023 by Corsairfoxfouruncle

I knew about the bumping tactics but didn't know about the extra tubing being added, thanks for the info on that and the fire extinguisher. 🙂 After adding the rest of the decals and fitting the windows I got it finished today, just in time to qualify for the Gallery. This is the first NASCAR kit that I've finished since the mid 80's but I can see a few more being built in the future.
