CrazyCrank Posted August 1, 2024 Author Posted August 1, 2024 Good afternoon happy modelers 😀 A short report to tell you that my operation has been successful yesterday, and that I’m recovering faster than I expected. It’s likely I’ll be back home in the middle of next week and that I could immediately bother you again crushing plastic and other materials. Many thanks to all of you for your wishes and prayers 👍 8

Thank you @Neddy Unfortunately, I came back home later than expected, due to some complications while starting feeding . I've not slept more than 2 hours a night during 2 weeks I'm suffering but I'm at home with my wife, my garden, my grand-children, and a lot of delicious food . And I've started to work again on my 300 SLR Coupé 38 minutes ago, keefr22 said: Take it easy Thierry, good to hear that you're home Keith Thank you so much @keefr22 It's good to hear some kind words from friends 👍 2

CrazyCrank Posted August 14, 2024 Author Posted August 14, 2024 Hello my friends, ladies and gentlemen Since I'm back home, I found some time between my naps (3 to 4 hours !!!! ) to work at the bench . And I made some little progress This evening , I'll only show you the work I did on the ignition system: As you know if you follow my thread, this car has a double ignition engine. So 2 magnetos. 8 cylinders, so 16 spark plugs ! Each magneto send the ignition to 8 plugs, but with a particularity : it send the ignition to 4 front and 4 rear cylinders The spark plug cables coming from the magnetos run through two sheath, each one driving 8 cables. The sheaths run along the middle of the left side of the engine and distribute the 8 cables into two flutes, one for the 8 front spark plugs and the other for the 8 rear ones. When I built the 722 Mille Miglia 30 SLR 2 years ago, I faced some difficulties to scale modeling this system, and for the sheaths, I used a 1.3 mm thick electric cable, which I removed the wires. But the inner diameter was much too restricted to be able to insert 8 0.3 mm cables into them, and I had to cheating ! This time, I've had a better idea: using heat shrinking tubing ! I chose 2 mm tube that shrinks to minimum 1.2 mm I prepared 16 spark plug cables, 0.3 mm thick, and attached them temporarily in groups of four with masking tape. I inserted, twice, 2 groups of 4 in a length of heat shrinking tubing, over a length of about 8 mm. AND, through the free end of each tubing, I inserted a 0.6 mm electric cable, because I wanted to avoid the tubing to flatten when heated if it was empty ! And I finally got that after heating: As you can see, the outcome is very neat, and the scale respected ! A lot of work is still to do on this ignition system - painting and attaching the 2 flutes - Wiring correctly the two magnetos - Installing the two sheaths - And then installing the spark plugs, then the air intake manifold - And at last, distributing the spark plug cables correctly (as on the real) in the flutes's holes , passing them between the manifold tubes ! Stay tuned for an update tomorrow with the assembly of the front axle and brake drums on the chassis. Sweet dreams 😇 7
othertales Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 Great to see you posting again. And in excellent building shape as always! 1
CrazyCrank Posted August 15, 2024 Author Posted August 15, 2024 Morning guys I feel much better than yesterday, thanks 😎 And as promised, before continuing with the ignition system, I'm going to show you now the assembly of the front axle and brake drums on the chassis I you assemble it OOB with the kit supplied parts, it's already a difficult job, but with my modified or 3D printed new ones, it's been a tedious and time consuming task. But...as you coud soon judge by yourself, it was worth he efforts ! The first task was to assemble the two axle knuckles with the steering bar. As for almost all car kits, you have to insert two plastic pins situated on the spindles, into the holes of the steering bar, and to flatten them with a heated piece of metal. To say the truth, I'm actually not a fan of this method which is unreliable, if not hazardous, and aesthetically detestable. So, I proceeded differently: I drilled the plastic pins to 0.5mm over their entire length until I crossed through their support. This allowed me to thread a very fine tailor's pin into the hole, which would later be used for the turning axle. The pin had to cross the hole in the steering bar before it can be inserted. As the head of the pin was not big enough, it obviously couldn't be stopped by the handlebar eyelet, so it fell through the hole! I made a washer from an M1 brass bolt, which I sanded down (my finger as well 🤣) to 0.3mm thick. Ant I threaded the tailor's pin through this washer, then through the bar, and then through the spindle pin Finally, to prevent the tailor pin from coming out of the system, I secured it from underneath using an M0.6 brass bolt, which I had previously drilled to 0.5mm, and a drop of CA. And of course, I cut off the excess tailor's pin flush with this bolt I repeated this job on the other side Then I grab all the sub-assemblies I had prepared to mount the front axle and brake drums to the chassis. I installed first these brake drums / front axle on the chassis Then I placed the spindles and steering bar on the lower suspension triangles, only to check the fitting Then I glued the piece that support the front axle and the upper suspension triangles on the chassis: It was then time to install the shock absorbers. And here, I've been disappointed because the new ones I'd 3D printed couldn't fit correctly, and, even if I'd cheated, they would have prevented the steering bar to move freely. So, I used the kit's ones, not perfectly accurate, but rather correct, improved them a bit with a good painting job, and installed them accordingly with the assembly instructions At last, I installed the spindles and steering bar, and fixed the upper suspension triangles on the support and the top of the spindles, what imprisoned them, while leaving them free to turn And now, a few close photographs: And some overviews: I'm very happy with this result. I've managed to work cleanly and very accurately, for once 😎 Stay tuned for the next update (wiring the magnetos), probably tonight, or tomorrow morning at the latest 😉 11

Yes, my Lord, my work wasn't really inaccurate but could be better, and without being dirty, it wasn't as sharp, neat, precise and flawless as I wanted. I'm aiming the same unbelievable quality of work and result than my reference modelers , A4 Garage and Kenji's Plastic Models, on Youtube. And I think that I'm slowly approaching it 3

That chronic chasm between how one imagined a detail will look like once time is spent on it and how it actually ends up looking like… That voice saying ‘why don’t you try again? You can do it a bit better…’ 😵 That’s how mine is. Lego mindset 😜 Edited August 15, 2024 by othertales 1
