Looking at a body primed in grey is always exciting, isn't it ?

Oh it really is! Yours looks particularly good as expected, really showing how elegant the profile is on that car 🤍

Hello my friends 🙂

I can't wait because I'd really like to paint my MB 300 SLR's bodywork this week, before I go in for another operation on Monday, following a colonic perforation in November, because then I'll be on the sidelines for a while.

But it's been too windy here since last week, and although I have a fairly sophisticated spray booth, my toxic fumes and dust are evacuated the old-fashioned way, through the window.
When it's windy, the chute backs up into the booth whatever it's trying to evacuate, and then the painting job is ruined by dust etc.🥵

So I'm afraid you won't see the end of this construction for several weeks yet.🙄

No worries on the wait for paint no point in spoiling an outstanding replica!

Hope the operation goes well and recovery is swift

Good luck with the operation Thierry! Wishing you a speedy recovery.

As for the build... I usually catch up a few pages at a time, as usual my jaw is on the floor. Spectacular!

Get well soon, hopefully you'll have better painting weather when you're back in action.

Thank you @Anteater for your kind words.
I've seen that you've been affected by a vision problem and that you've recently returned to the bench. I wish you all the best.

Thanks @JeroenS... I'll try to keep my heart beating (for me and all my friends on Britmodellers.com)
As for your jaw, I'm a doctor, not a magician, despite what some people think. 🥴  Anyways thank you very much for this great implied praise 😎

Evening Gentlemen :)

The weather is always very windy here, so it's impossible to paint anything with a can or the airbrush .

That's why, to take a break from the hard work of modifying the bodywork of my Ford Mustang, which is still in progress, I returned to the Mercedes.

And I've done a very small, but nice job:

Examining the photos of the door interiors of the  Uhlenhaut Coupé with blue interior on display in Stuttgart, and comparing them with the door interior panels supplied in the kit, I've already noticed that :

- the opening handle is too small
- is incorrectly positioned (too far back in relation to the locking plate on the door opener)
- and above all, the locking latch is missing, as well as the metal plate framing the handle and the blue leatherette trim underneath this plate

I've decided to cut off the handle molded in the plastic part and to replace this stuff by a 3D printed part, representing what's missing or wrong.

I drew it in Fusion 360:

The 3D printed parts:

In fact, I've also printed these parts (left and right) in two different elements to make them easier to paint

- the upholstery relief, which is blue
- and the hardware, which is stainless steel.

54254617866_f47afb6ed1_c.jpg

I also noticed, looking at the outside of the inside door panels, that the outside handle is moulded into them, and in a very bad way.
The ugly handle goes through the outer panel of the door, through a slot, and protrudes.

This will be replaced by homemade metal handles 😉

Stay tuned for next episodes

As usual I'm late catching up with your updates Thierry, so first can I add my very best wishes for a completely succesful operation and a very speedy and full recovery.

Those replacement door handles look great and for such a small item will make an enormous ipmrovement over what the kit offers!

All the very best

Thanks Keith for the wishes and the kind comment 😎

With all the wishes and prayers I've been the subject of, if I die on the operating table, it will be a huge disappointment for me. 😉🤣

Evening chaps :)

This morning, hoping that the windy weather would calm down, as it was announced, I wet sanded with Alclad Micromesh 6000, then 8000 grit, the 2 coats of GRAVITY colors grey primer that I'd sprayed a few weeks ago, and I thought I could spray the aluminium base coat today.
BUT, after my careful micromesh sanding, I noticed that here and there the "caca d'oie" yellow-green MOTIP primer filler had reappeared !
So I had no choice but to apply a new coat of GRAVITY grey primer, concentrating on the exposed areas.

Here is the excellent result I got:

See ya later for next episode ;)

A bit of progress on the car today.

I've managed to spray the first 2 coats of Alcoa Aluminium from Gravity Colors, the same color I used to paint Stirling Moss's 300 SLR.
The difference is that this time the clear coat will be glossy and not semi gloss.

The result is already nice, but I've to spray at least one wet coat more, which I'll do tomorrow if the weather, windy again since this evening, allows !

As I always point out, the high magnification of the cameras built into our smartphones and their excellent optical qualities mean that even the slightest flaw is apparent; they are merciless.
Of course, with the naked eye, and even up close, you won't see any granulation or orange peel.
In any case, after the last coat of base paint and before the varnish, the surfaces will be gently sanded with 8000 grit water.

Have a nice evening and see you later for next episode.

Thats a lovely finish - Andy

Thank you very much Andy, for your kind words, much appreciated 👍

It wasn't the finish though, as I sprayed the last 2 wet coats today.

And now the finish seems lovely, despite 3 or 4 micro dust particles stuck to the bonnet, which I'll remove tomorrow with a delicate wet sanding 8000 then 12000 grit, even if I have to apply a final very light coat afterwards to even out the surface.

The body shell seems (is) perfect :

And the other parts seem to be perfect too, but it's an illusion !

If you can't see the flaws, here's a close-up view off the bonnet:

That finish is looking very nice CC, well done.  Yep, looking close-up can be disconcerting to say the least, but I don't think your close up is bad at all, the finish is very uniform so should look great after clear coating.

I do like the look of that silver. I think silver paint of 40 + years ago was somewhat different to more recent metallics and am wondering which brand to go for if I ever get round to doing my Merc. ("Ah, you wish to buy a Mercedes, what colour silver would you like it in?")

Afternoon guys :)

Now the paint is flawless, if not perfect, on the bonnet and boot lid

I removed the dust with 6000/8000 wet sanding and sprayed a very light coat on the parts to even out the surface.

Close-ups showing a slightly "grainy" surface, especially  on the bonnet  - Optical illusion due to the powerful camera

Lovely paintwork! I'm getting close to painting the Jag now, and I'm not looking forward to it. My normal paintwork is on WWI aircraft, so definitely not high gloss and flawless!
