Slater
I've also seen this aircraft referred to as the MiG-21SMB. This was the variant with the expanded fuel tank on the spine of the aircraft. Evidently production was somewhat limited and this MiG-21 variant seems to be regarded as unsuccessful. I've read that there were center of gravity issues with the heavier fuel load, or were there other factors as well?
modelldoc
The MiG-21 SMT (also E-7SMT, product 50, product 50bis) was a special attacker version with more fuel options but with the bigger fuel tank on the back the flight conditions are badly. Only 281 MiG-21 SMT are produced. MiG-21SMT (1971; Izdeliye 50; NATO "Fishbed-K") S = Sapfir (referring to the Sapfir-21/RP-22 radar), M = Modernizirovannyy ("Modernised"), T = Toplivo ("Fuel," referring to increased fuel capacity) A development of the MiG-21SM with increased fuel capacity. This variant is easily spotted thanks to its larger spine, which made it unpopular with pilots as it was much harder to fly. There is a model kit from the former Minsk toy factory: https://www.flickr.com/photos/21603181@N08/12990362204/in/photolist-rWMvSX-kMV179-9kKabQ-T5Ls9X-9rvpjv-9q2ryK modelldoc
Jure Miljevic
Back in the 70's and 80's also referred as SMBT in some western publications and assumed to be a tactical nuclear bomber. Eduard produce this kit in 1/48, no idea about 1/72. Cheers Jure
tempestfan
If I'm not mistaken, the OEZ kit also had an SMT option - but probably few people would consider going for it when there's an state-of-the-art Eduard around...
GiampieroSilvestri
The Eduard 1/48 scale model is also available in a Revell of Germany box but it is more expensive than the original version. tempestfan
Isn't that the kit that had some inspiration by (read: copy of with modifications to the spine) the KP kit?
modelldoc
Inspiration is okay, but it is complete new mould. modelldoc

I built it this year after finding it on eBay.

Ryan Hothersall
My take on that kit. Built as a MiG-21MT.
