Henschel HS P.75, Scratchaeronautics, 1/48

been working on this one now and then till I got to the point that I was actually achieving something...

The Henschel P.75 was a proposal for a heavy fighter to replace the Bf-110 (2 engined heavy fighter). Initially it was to be propelled by a DB-610 engine (2 coupled DB605 engines, but this unit was prone to overheating, and it was to be changed into a DB613 (2 coupled DB603 engines)

This engine was to propell 2 contrarotating propellors  with a 3.2m diameter. The form of the engine gave it a flat, wide section. Further it was to have a nose gear, canards and a rudder at the bottom that also could serve as a bumper to not to damage the propeller during take-off and landing.

This configuration gave home to 4 30mm cannons in the nose (4x 30mm MK-108 kanonnen) for concentrated fire.

Windtunneltests were promising, but in the end the project was halted. Later on some planes appeared in a similar layout like the J7W1 Shinden, XP-55 Ascender, but these all had a troubled short life, also due to heating problems, jet engines coming available, etc...

The kit:

What is is supposed to look in the end:

First job was to remove all parts from the pouring blocks. To prevent aligning problems when glueing with CA, I drilled holes for positioning pins.

and dryfit:
1303591-11032-72-1440.jpg

The cockpit was very sparse, but started connecting the main parts for sanding:
1303592-11032-74-1440.jpg

1303594-11032-46-1440.jpg

1303593-11032-22-1080.jpg

and a new cockpit was made from styrene and paper:
1303595-11032-60-pristine.jpg

Om deze beter te kunnen detailleren heb ik de romp nog in 2 delen gelaten:
1303596-11032-86-1440.jpg

1303597-11032-11-1440.jpg

The hull is mostly massive resin, so it is heavy. The landing gear is also resin, but I think it will deform over time. So I got a bit creative with Albion Alloy tubing:

Yesterday I had some work done on the cockpit. I wanted to try some Quinta Studio decals to see how they work (Sidewalls are in paper, so i can adjust these to the hull when glueing everything)

1306778-11032-25-1440.jpg

And cutting these up to fit the cockpit:
1307278-11032-47-1440.jpg

and finally glued them as you would with regular decals, but they advise to use some PVA-glue, and it is a necessity

1307277-11032-65-1440.jpg

and to be honest, these Quinta Studia decals are a charm to work with.

It's a new one to me. The brass gear is a good idea. An ejection seat would also have been a good idea.

It also looks like there wouldn't have been much room for fuel, so drop tanks would probably be a must.

thanks for the input. Been thinking about that ejection seat... could be with the idea of explosive bolts for the screws at the rear to avoid things getting mixed up. Those external fuel tanks are a great idea... Haven't thought about that to be honest

A beautifully wierd Luft '46 design that I hadn't seen before, I love it! You're doing a good job of it as well. I'll pull up a set for the rest of this one

Thx James.

Started on the wings this weekend.

Postponed it because of the weird section they have

1310157-11032-91-1440.jpg

Their section is almost symmetrical, against all logic concerning generating lift, and the autistic engineer in me says aaaarrrggggghh 1310154-11032-44-1440.jpg

This is what should be removed from the resin wings, looks a lot of sanding...

An easier problem was this dent in the trailing edge:
1310155-11032-10-1440.jpg

Some heat with a mini-heatgun and a bit of pushing later:
1310160-11032-10-1440.jpg

Also the holes for the alignment/reinforcement pins are drilled

1310158-11032-90-1440.jpg

And dryfit:
1310159-11032-85-1440.jpg

So...

To sand or not to sand... that is the question. Opinions are appreciated

So... I bit the bullet and sanded the wing profile.

The things that bothered me most were:
- the overall thickness
- the rear of the wings were very thick with a very steep bend to make for a thin trailing edge
- upper and lower side weren't defined... left and right could be interchanged

- it didn't look like a wingprofile

there aren't any drawings to rely on, so here it goes... 80 grit, 120grit and 360grit

before

1310154-11032-44-1440.jpg

halfway

1310784-11032-75-1440.jpg

to:

1310783-11032-37-1440.jpg

Symmetry looks ok so far

1310785-11032-51-1440.jpg

Some more will be needed till they fit the hull:
1310787-11032-25-1440.jpg

1310786-11032-33-1440.jpg

1310788-11032-73-1440.jpg

soon more...

Thank you James,.

Another night of sanding... first filling the gaps with CA and the dust from the previous sanding proces.

1311319-11032-31-1080.jpg

1311320-11032-15-1080.jpg

And some filler for some finer sanding. Also a lot of airbubbles in the wing, hence the extra filler there

1311321-11032-48-1080.jpg

1311323-11032-10-1080.jpg

and then a general view so far with the nose attached:

1311322-11032-79-1440.jpg

So guess what I will do the next modelling session...

I'm really enjoying watching this take shape. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the paint too

p.s. Is your username anything to do with Dimmu Borgir?

Thx James,

yes, when I was a student a long time ago, I was a big fan (now I don't really follow it anymore) hence the nickname (together with Cradle of Filth, Children of Bodom etc..)

Primer applied..

some small holes from bubbles in the wing, but overall rather good:

That looks like a nice smooth coat of primer :)

Big fan of all of those bands as well, plus a good friend played for Cradle for a bit. Coincidentally, he now lives in Belgium too

Thx guys.

started the scribing :

first on the topside marked everything in pencil as a guide:
1315445-11032-64-1440.jpg

In between there's some small filling to do with tiny amounts of CA (airbubbles, wrong engraving, etc...), but most areas need some sanding anyway.
1315444-11032-27-1440.jpg

Next up is the actual engraving with the use of a JLC microsaw and the MRP scribers, a steel ruler and some patience.
1315879-11032-47-1440.jpg

The holes are gone.. a nice smooth wing, except for the double line...

1315880-11032-85-1440.jpg

1315878-11032-40-1440.jpg

The nose will require more work, because I am adapting it till the platework corresponds more with the canards and acces for the MG's and ammo...

Most difficult part is the difference in hardness, not only in the different areas of the resin, but also where the CA is applied. That's where the microsaw comes in very handy.

Cooling has always been a serious problems aircraft with the engine tucked away halfway into the hull. At the bottom there were some cooling vents cut out, there will also be cooling scoops on top and bottom, but I still wanted to open up the louvres at the topside.

1316590-11032-30-1440.jpg

Found out that it was better to make the vertical cuts first and then scrape away the material

1317313-11032-47-1440.jpg

1317306-11032-84-1440.jpg

Also made a start at the bottomside

Yesterday I did some work for the layout for the positioning of airscoops, exhausts, etc...

Bottomside with additional droptank, resin Typhoon exhausts (here the size looks good), extra guns under the wings to compensate for the lack of 2 mg's in the nose (only 2 there instead of four... ) 1318227-11032-85-1440.jpg

on the top side it's a bit of a different story. The creme parts are the original ones:

1318225-11032-45-1440.jpg

the original exhausts don't look streamlined for the design, but the typhoon exhausts look way too large.

I also have some other exhausts that I would have to cut up that are smaller and maybe fit better at the top:

1318224-11032-90-1440.jpg

The only part I would use are these:

1318226-11032-71-1440.jpg

Opinions, remarks, etc... more then welcome
