1/48 - Mil Mi-8MT/Mi-17 "Hip-H" by Trumpeter - released

Looks quite nice, I should probably get one when it comes out (hopefully some aftermarket decals will follow quickly enough).

The only issue might be the high asking price as their 1/48 Hinds are quite close to their 1/35 brethren price-wise.

Stencils in Czech?!? Well, that's great for me anyway. I am really interested in this one, however I am more tempted to build a Czech one than one carrying red stars. But I guess that aftermarket decals will be released soon. Although I hope that a T version will follow, so that I can build a Finnish one.

The plastic looks great and I appreciate the little bit of photo etch although I am not sure what the parts are - are these really seatbelts?  Also I am not a fan of their decal strategy.  Their decals work great but when they do stencils, if you look closely, they are just lines, not actual words.  Some won't notice once on the model but it annoys me.  I would need aftermarket stencils.  But overall this looks like a great kit!

I see windscreen wipers, the fans for the cockpit presumably; not sure what those two items on the top right are, but they don't look like seatbelts.

I don't think so... How many countries use version with a machine gun mounted in the front cabin? Seems Trumpeter reduced options only to Soviet - Afghan War version - not avoiding mistake that needs correction - flare dispensers mounting belts on the tail boom (however correct ones on fuselage are also present) have to be removed.

The Czech stencils for the Doppler Navigation radar seem to be an odd error by Trumpeter (surprise, surprise ).

Especially because of the clear part with the opening for the MG but also because of the other optional parts (or lack of them) which are offered (large external fuel tanks, flare dispensers on the tail, exhaust gas mixers, dust filters, tail gunner position) it seems you really can build an Afghan War Hip only.

There are other errors too, see here for an initial assessment (hope it's ok to link to another forum): http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?/topic/329024-mi-8mt-mi-17-trumpeter-zvezda/&do=findComment&comment=3094385

Ok, with too much free time at hand, I've done some more research and while it remains true that OOB you are limited to an Afghan War Hip, there are a few more options with a frontal machine gun if one doesn't mind some modifications.

More recent Russian machines:

Or some Kazakh examples:

Main problem is that most examples above don't have the exhaust gas mixers fitted. Trumpeter doesn't seem to provide proper exhausts as they expect them to be installed. Only hope is that someone makes aftermarket exhausts like for the Mi-24.

Another modification visible is on the Doppler radar box on the tail. Seems it was elongated to the back (additional avionics?) on many examples shown in the links.

And you need to blank off the tail gunner position (seems the required part is supplied).

There you have it. While it is possible to expand the limited options Trumpeter provides in this boxing, it will require some work by the modeller to do so.

Cheers

Just wondering what are the parts 12/13/19/20 on sprue C for? They kind of look like regular exhausts.

Hm, not sure what they are but considering their size (not much larger than the front wheels) they seem too small for being the main exhaust. Maybe they are for the APU?

I think parts 5/6/7/8 on Sprue H3 are for the main exhaust (at least the parts you can see with the gas mixers installed).

I've seen the H3 5/6/7/8 parts, but, as you've said, they're too shallow to be used without the IR suppressors so I was trying to locate some alternative parts in case Trumpeter considered releasing other boxings.

Of course, I've just quickly glanced through the sprues and failed to notice they're about the size of the front wheels, when they should be closer to the size of the main wheels instead. Sorry for that.

No offence Shorty but and I quote 'they have no idea what's going on with them at the moment' due to Covid - the rest of the world is doing just fine commuicatig via Teams, E-mail, you name it, I'm far from convinced this should be a factor.

I suspect that Annetra, Tan Model and a bunch of other fly by nights cannot put their money where their mouth is - completly unrelated to Covid.

Glad Trumpy is picking this up - hopefully the A-Team.

Marc.

Yes.....agreed....but you know that 'It's due to the COVID situation' is going to be used as an excuse for everything for the next 5 years....I hear it in the bank, supermarket, buying spare parts for my car, shipping from the Far East and now, it seems, kit production.
