  • Marklo changed the title to Dangerous machines, death traps, disasters and design flaws - at 29 and headed for the 24 bunfight

Hi @Marklo

If you count the Group B rally cars that were too fast and too dangerous that Group B rallying got banned, then I'm in with a Lancia 037 or a Quattro

I'd happily contribute an Avia S-199 to this GB, it wasn't nicknamed the Mule for nothing...

Some quotes from the IAF 101st Squadron website:

"It had very narrow landing gear, for which reason it ground-looped very easily and several of our pilots ground-looped it."

"Another thing even worse... is that fact that it had two .30-caliber machine guns in the cowl synchronized to fire through a three-bladed, paddle-bladed, wooden prop. We had at least two or three of our pilots experienced the synch going out and shooting off their own props. That was a hell of a situation...."

"With the lesser horsepower (of the Jumo versus the Daimler-Benz engine), the machine was found to have high take-off and landing speeds, while the narrow gauge of the undercarriage, along with a monstrous torque, frequently caused dangerous direction deviations on the ground."

"The entire squadron spent most of one afternoon releasing an unhurt pilot who was trapped in his upside down Messerschmitt after somersaulting on landing, with the ground soaked in petrol and the petrol tanks dripping relentlessly."

'Landing gear routinely would not descend without some pilot-induced bumping and shaking.'

If I remember correctly the Eduard kit comes with one of Modi Alon's S-199s, who would later die trying to lower his landing gear by performing some pilot-induced bumping and shaking.

I’ll stick my name in for this one with an F2A-3 Buffalo, described as being unstable and overweight and nicknamed the ‘flying coffin’ by USMC pilots, I think this would fit the bill. Heavily outclassed by the Japanese zeros on the pacific. I’ve got the midway boxing of the special hobby version in the stash.

Another example of an aircraft getting a bad reputation for the crime of being “obsolete, but used anyways, usually in lopsided situations with poor tactics”.

The Finns had a different view of the Buffalo, after all….

(Not saying it doesn’t fit in to the theme as it has evolved…)

I think of it as being akin to the BE2c or the fairey Battle perfect for the imagined role but suicidal in practice.

In my mind the brief is anything that was just as dangerous to the crew as the enemy :)

Shall I add you to the list Bill.

Looks like my Bristol Brigand languishing in the stash may yet see the light of day. However from my previous experience of Valom kits it's a disaster waiting to happen🫣

Can I play? I have one of Airfix He177, Red Star Lagg3, Airfix Fairey Battle (with plastic card and filler) and a FROG Vampire to DH108 conversion in mind...

With a lineup like that you just have to participate, I mean your leading out with the plane nicknamed the flying coffin….

I know it's early days still, but I'm wondering if the Bristol Brigand in my stash will ever get built.

Come on everyone, let's get this up and running- otherwise we won't be able to crash and burnin true deathtraps style later.

Anyone want an unstated Valom Bristo Brigand? Just asking!

I think this isn't going to fly, which is a shame because nor did it's previous version as Things you wouldn't want to go to war in . Plus I forgot all about the Bristol GB so I don't see it ever taxiing out of that hanger known as The Stash!

Some (not looking at @trickyrich) would say it's stabbing a proposal when it's down, I look on it as a merciful release; but with heavy heart I've moved my vote away from this to sure up another candidate in the absolute dogfight of the 'in with a chance' part of the bunfight.

As Enzo would say, that is the way of the Bunfighter…
