JOCKNEY
Well as you can see it's a bang up to date kit..... circa 1971 Here's the parts Instructions and decals, I'll be using the ancient Frog ones for a Chinese airforce version. Good luck everyone Cheers Pat
81-er
1971? Isn't that a bit new for you, Pat? Should be a good build though, welcome aboard! James
gingerbob
Look at that impressive cockpit detail!
jean
Hi Pat, looking at the kit, I would throw my tube of filler away if I were you. This has the hallmark of a shake and bake kit! Mark my word! I know nothing of Chinese P-38s, so at least I will learn something useful! Have fun. JR
AdrianMF
I feel a bit guilty about going all modern with the 1973 Airfix mould now! Looking forward to this. Regards, Adrian
trickyrich
Welcome along Pat and with a classic model that's probably older than most here!!! Hopefully the complex instruction won't prove too difficult for you....thou I am worried you'll get stuck building up the cockpit! You if you wanted you could always fit an Aires resin pit, it probably wouldn't be too hard to fit!! Anyway, good luck with the build Pat, it is always great to see these golden oldies being built, plus I do like the scheme you've chosen as well!
AdrianMF
The mould dates from 1958, so just older than me! One of Airfix’s very first wave of aircraft kits. Make sure you get the nose wheel leg at the right angle, as shown by the painting instructions… Regards, Adrian 🤪

Thanks for the heads up Adrian
JOCKNEY
So as I'm working away it's a chance to do a bit to this one. Now I know I'm stating the obvious but to avoid a tail sitter it's going to need a bit of weight... This should do nicely ! Nose filled, now for the front of cockpit Same treatment to the front of the engine nacelle I hope this is enough ! Cheers Pat

AdrianMF
Nice to see someone else using a mole wrench for their modelling. Sometimes it’s the only tool for the job! Coming along nicely. Regards, Adrian 1

JOCKNEY
Long overdue an update Yes as you can see I've managed to break one of the props ! Parts fit isn't to bad, but bit of filler will be required Cheers Pat
AdrianMF
Getting there! The 1973 tooling feels almost Tamiyaesque in comparison. Mind you, it looks like a Lightning. The outer boom halves look a different colour plastic. Is that a trick of the light or did you prime them? Regards, Adrian

Regards, Adrian No your eyes don't deceive you, I sprayed the tail with white paint as I can't seem to be able to brush paint white or yellow Cheers Pat
JOCKNEY
Looks like the olive drab is going to need more than one coat. The undercarriage is on, it sits at all the correct angles and is able to withstand the amount of lead I've put in, so it's not a tailsitter ! The canopy has come up lovely and Klear, sorry couldn't resist it ! So I'll need to put a pilot in that great big open space of a cockpit, full of 1970s detail ! JOCKNEY
So I put the stripes on the tail tonight using decals..... Yes they are the wrong colour as they should be close to the same shade of blue in the insignia. Looks like I'll have to paint them on after all.
81-er
It'll be worth it, Pat It's shaping up to be a fine looking model James
JOCKNEY
I knew it would happen, I broke the nose wheel off ! So I drilled out the leg and fuselage and used a piece of copper wire to join the 2, much stronger 💪 Cheers Pat
AdrianMF
It may be an old and basic kit but it looks smashing! If it’s any consolation I’ve broken the nose leg of one of my Lightnings, and I haven’t even fitted the damn’ thing yet! Regards, Adrian
jean
This model does look like a P-38, AND it makes me feel much younger than I am. I can see people wearing bear skins at the entrance of caves running around with their little P-38s while chewing on leg bones... Ignore me... Just hallucinations due to a nasty bout of malaria. This Lightning is lovely Pat, all 20 pounds of it! Have fun. JR
JOCKNEY
Well I'm calling this one done. Really glad the front undercarriage repair has worked. I repainted the tail stripes in H15 which was a better match to blue in the insignias. The amount of lead I added now makes it feel like a die-cast aircraft when you pick it up ! However it's not a tail sitter Hope you like it Cheers Pat
81-er
That's a nice build, Pat Hopefully the u/c can withstand all the weight after the fix. Thank you for joining in, this one's been entertaining to follow James
