Pitch Black Darwin 2022

Hello again fellow modellers (though I havent touched a model for 8 months now!),

I got back home from my 6 month sojourn in the UK about a month ago, when I was making preparations for my return I became aware that Pitch Black was going to commence just over a week from my return date. I made the decision to conduct an 8500km road trip from Perth to Darwin and return taking about 5 days each way so I could stop for breaks and wildlife photography along the way. Aircraft photography wise the highlight of the trip was viewing a mini airshow from a boat at Mindil beach. Because the boat was positioned up sun of the Osprey and the RAAF F-35 I got some great pics in the sunset golden light. Here are a few sample pictures, there are heaps more full size images in the photostream.

Some superb images Wally of types, and nations we rarely if ever get to see here in the UK. Fantastic light conditions and my particular favourites are the F-35 topsides and the specially marked German Eurofigter.  Jealous? Not 'alf!

Great photos Wally! Had a flight out of Darwin last week which was delayed, so had the chance to park at the end of the runway to watch a whole heap takeoff and saw them all landing from the airport terminal bar.

Really like the reflection of the water in the canopy in the 2nd F-35 picture. The bird poo adds a nice touch too!

Thanks mate, I saw a qantas flight delayed at the holding point for about 45 mins while some 50 jets recovered. I wondered what that distortion on the canopy was.. I didnt ping to the fact it was reflection of the water!

Fantastic photos Wally.

I was there too and will post some photos later in a separate thread. It was a great event for seeing rare aircraft. My favourites were the camo Indonesian F-16s.

We were on the left hand hill at Mindil, so the flying was far away apart from the F-35. Your shots are far better than mine, so a boat is definitely the way to go.

Great stuff

Andy

Some great photos there Wally. Thanks for sharing.

I was in Darwin in August 2014, staying at a mate's place not far from the airport. Saw some exotic stuff flying but sadly, no photos.
