Philip Goldstein and the story of his P-38J

Recommended Posts

Think that's a design error, based maybe on an assumption an aircraft should not have a nose-high attidude ?
It is good to know, as any next one may benefit from extending the oleo a bit more (or smuggling 0.1-0.2" styrene block on the mounting).

That said, It does not seem that extreme, it is still nose-up in the side view.

Take care, friend.

Stress fractures are no fun at all to deal with. At least this one is finished, so put your feet up for a bit ;)

I can’t comment on the stance (and having gotten the wheel wells on the wrong ways round on both of my Airfix builds it’s probably wisest not to talk about anything wheels-related) but the build and the finish look fantastic, so please don’t be hard on yourself!

Regards,

Adrian

It looks great.  I think the P-38's look a little bit leggy in real life as well.  Especially planes without bombs or fuel tanks.  All of the prototype pictures seem to look a bit different.  I suspect fuel load and armament make a difference in how they stand.

Hi,

Yes, I concur with what The Rib Man said.

The model looks fine to me. Unlike the one in the picture that Big Phantom Stu posted, it has the droptanks fitted. When these things were full, it must have had an influence on the stance.

Cheers, Stefan.
