1/72 DC-3 "Skyliner" from the Airfix C-47 kit

Recommended Posts

Wow, those are beautiful Harry.

Looks like Airfix nailed the shapes on that one. The ESCI kit has some nice qualities but when you look at the nose it becomes obvious that something isn't quite right.

by request...have managed to find some old photos taken during my first DC-3 Skyliner conversion...

The window cutouts needed to be raised by 1mm to accommodate 6mm square (17" full scale) windows. One existing cutout needed to be filled on the starboard side and an extra window cutout forward on both sides. Full interior was scratch built with the cabin being lined with  tissue and painted.

Stellar work on this, and inspiring as always!  How did you ensure the windows were "true" in size, shape (and for those you drilled out, spacing)?

As luck would have it...I'm building another one of these on commission (for the airline CEO).  I just uploaded these new pics (of the new model under construction) from my phone. The Airfix kit has oversize cutout for the cabin windows anyway, I just enlarged them (raised the cutouts). The extra window was measured and aligned with a straight edge on both sides of the forward fuselage.  I cut out and shape new window inserts made from CD case plastic. super glue these it and be prepared to wet sand everything flush with 180, 400, 800 grade sandpaper. I then used polishing compound to get the best finish. :)

There is a trick to the actual windows, I cut out a template from plastic card and then traced the outline of the window onto tamiya masking tape. When positioning the tape on the inserts they need to be properly aligned. The next step is to prime the window area with grey primer (to get internal framing showing inside cabin, then the upper fuselage is sprayed with white primer and then finishing coats  prior to removal of the masks :)

Interesting, I see that you use my second favourite source of transparent plastic - CD case (number one is Ferrero Rocher sweet box)

Would it be easier to insert a full length window line strip rather than dealing with individual windows?

the Ferraro Rocher container souled like a good option. Yes, single strip of plastic? Might work, ‘many ways to skin a cat’ I guess, however there might be issues with the DC-3 fuse as too many compound curves

Wow….nice DC3.
I just bought one Italeri C47 yesterday and intended to convert it to a DC3. Looks like I need to go down the same route as you; put in a cabin and print my own decals. Reason is there is simply no aftermarket product for my intended build.

Thanks for posting the pix of your work on the interior! One of these days I want to build a pre-war LOT Ju-52 airliner, and this is a great example! :clap2:

Awesome work on the (new) DC-3!

I’m an even bigger fan of F-27’s and yours looks superb!

I’m thinking it’s from the Airfix kit (rather than ESCI/Italeri), but correct me on that if I am mistaken.

Both models look terrific anyway.

👏👏👏

They are both gorgeous.

You've done a superb job with both these. I have a real soft spot for the DC3/C47 in post war civilian liveries. I did the Airfix Dan Air version a while ago, but I feel more could be on the way.
