Marklo
So this is as much a statement of intent and a request for help as the start of a build thread. It’s the centenary of the formation of the Irish Air Corp, and the Martinsyde was the Air Corps first plane. So what better model to mark the event. This is the beast. But I have a slight problem, this is the closest drawing I can get hold of; and notwithstanding the obvious fuselage and rudder differences I’m not sure if the planview is correct for the Big Fella. So can anyone point me in the direction of a correct plan view? Edited September 4, 2022 by Marklo
Biggles87
Can’t help you with plans I’m afraid but it’s different enough for me to want to follow. Good luck. John. 🇺🇦

That looks much closer the tail configuration is the same as the Big Fella and the nose also looks correct. I think that’s good enough to run with. Marklo
A small start and probably the last thing that will go on the build. The nose decal. Next I need to scale the plans the wingspan works out at just under 11 inches, so it is fairly large for it’s time. I’ll probably start cutting out blanks later today. I’ll probably moms the nose and upper decking so some wood work required.
Marklo
Doing things a bit differently here. Rather than scale the plan and then duels off it. I’ve laid out blanks for the main component by overlaying them on the plan then scaling them to known dimensions. I’ll print them out attack them to some plastic sheet with double sided sticky and cut them out.
Marklo
Plastic has been cut. Woodwork and a rummage through the spares box next, I’m pretty sure I have at least a radiator and possibly a nose from the Brisfit kit, that I can use s as me I need some wheels, seats and a prop. Having been asked the question of how I cut out the parts. First off I attach the artwork to plastic sheet with double sided tape. Then in this case I used a large scissors to cut along the outlines for the fuselage parts. For the wings I used my Lidl paper cutter to cut a strip the right size then trimmed the ends using the big scissors. Marklo
That’s the buck for the upper decking and fuselage done. Not so successful in the spares box front there is a spare nose but it’ll probably be more work to reshape it the to just make one.
Marklo
Plastic has been glued. As you can see next to my Fokker DVII the big fella is quite big for its era.
Marklo
A sharp blade.. And a razorsaw later.. The lower wing now attaches nearly to the fuselage.
Marklo
Not getting a lot of bench time at the moment but I managed to vac the upper fuselage in clear acetate. I may not use the turtledeck but I’ll use the middle and forward sections.
JohnHaa
Marklo, Very nice model to build and in the correct scale....😄 Maybe is this Wip of some use for you, as I mostly build from scratch too. https://modelbrouwers.nl/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53671 I will follow your progress with interest, good luck ! noelh
Certainly this interesting. I don't think The Big Fella has ever been modelled before.

Marklo
Dry fitting the components together. I should get around to shaping and fitting the lower wing in the next day or two. I’m also going to cut up the fuselage buck to make some parts for the nose.
Marklo
Cut up the fuselage buck so I can vac the radiator cover and the nose upper decking.
Marklo
The wings have been bent but not skinned yet or diehedral set. But I thought I’d dry fit all the sub components. Kind of surprising how far along he build is by virtue of just chipping along. Next step will be to skin the wings and tail surfaces, I’m waiting on brass rod in the post before I tackle the wings as I want to put a brass spar through both to keep them straight and to help with setting the dihedral. Marklo
So what’s this I hear you ask. It’s a new wing bending/clamping jig wide enough to take the upper wing. My brass rod also arrived in the post yesterday, so should get the two sets of wings rolled and skinned tomorrow. More to follow.
Marklo
Lower wing skinned and clamped. And set. I need to trim the ends and chord width, then set the diehedral and attach them to the fuselage.
bigbadbadge
What cracking work Mark and very quick too. Looking good. Great idea for the wing bending jig. Chris
Marklo
Lower wing trimmed, shaped and scribed and attached along with the horizontal tail surfaces. Nose area next I think. More amarach
Marklo
Added a few bulkheads, trimmed the upper cowling. Skinned and trimmed the rudder. The rear upper decking and the rudder are just dry fitted. Starting to take shape.
Marklo
Cutouts made on the turtledeck and some paint. I reckon the sides would have been wooden stringers and spars and the turtledeck made from ply.
Marklo
A bit of filling and sanding and a quick coat of paint to see where it stands. The turtledeck is just dry fitted.
