Airfix Little Owl

Had this kit from a long time ago about 40 years during some house renovation it got damaged so a repair and repaint was on the cards as the missus liked it in the conservatory.

Repairs as in the head came off and it all broke up.  :rage:

So all glued back again filled in the gaps and started to prime up and post shade.

Lovely.

It’s a shame no modern manufacturers make kits of subjects like this. I would have thought there would be a market.

It would be nice if Airfix released the bird kits again as in the Classics range.

Steve / Mike

It would be great to get new kits of these they are great fun and a change from the normal stuff I do bit more colour in the model room and do not take as long to build as ships.

I will also be doing repairs and builds on these the Woodpecker is as old as the Owl the two kits I recently picked up at the SCOTNATS Kit swap bit of nostalgia crept in.

A few more details painted in and some dry brush work on the wings need to leave a couple of days to dry before varnish and some oil washes to go now just need to find the little mouse and get the base ready.

Nice one @beefy66 👍

I am due to build one of these for an ATF Figure GB starting in two weeks time. Hopefully, I can make as good a job as you are doing with your restoration.

Never ever seen these before.

Not been available for a long time.  They did 6, Bullfinches, Bluetits, Robins, Kingfisher, Little Owl, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.

I think the last time they had a UK airing was late 80's,   Airfix Tribute Forum would be the place,  @davecov  would know the links better.

Some/all the range got issued in Japan by Gunze-Sangyo, in 1999 it seems.  I got the Little Owl and Woodpecker about 10 years ago cheap from Hobbylink Japan,

I think the Owl and Woodpecker are pretty hard to find in Airfix boxes, the Scalemates link that says 1975 for the Owl is wrong, probably 1985.

If you look on Scalemates there was a US range of 1:1 bird kits by Bachmann as well, never seen any of those.

@Troy Smith The Owl was only issued by Airfix from 1981-1984. Also issued by Gunze Sangyo from 1999 to 2005 and in 2013.

You can find links to details of the issues of all of the Airfix birds at the links below. The dates shown are the first year of issue by Airfix:

Bluetits 1978
Bullfinches 1976
Kingfisher 1980
Little Owl 1981
Robins 1979
Woodpecker 1982

Nice work and I completely empathasize with the time ships take - Colombo stretches ever onwards

Cheers Troy you have just reminded me of how many of these kits Airfix did these are quite collectable nowadays at the SCOTNATS an Owl kit was going for £70 the finches and Robins were only £15 each

I found the mouse and have started to repaint that will not be using the kit base so have used a peace of branch from the garden and a re-purposed base.

  • 4 weeks later...

This thread reminds me of pre covid when we took the grandkids to the Wetland and Wildlife shop at Rushden lakes. There was an owl enthusiast there with some rescue birds, and the grandkids got to have a real life Little Owl perch on their arm.
