Special Hobby 1/72 Short Sunderland Mk.V

Recommended Posts

A marathon run at this one as it was started on Christmas Eve last year.

As with all Special Hobby kits there are foibles and challenges but the major issues with this build were entirely of my own making.

I had got her to the stage that i was starting to do some weathering on the fuselage but on June 17th I had an entirely avoidable accident with thinners resulting in this.

Resisting the urge to launch it straight into the bin I decided to see if it was salvageable.

Special Hobby came to the rescue with Decals and I got another masking set for the canopy.

Once everything arrived she was stripped back and restarted.

Bringing us to today,

WIP Here

Be warned it's a long one.

Primed with Tamiya Neutral Grey,

Painted with ColourCoats Interior Grey Green, Extra Dark Sea Grey, Tamiya Nato Black, Flat White, Buff, Medium Sea Grey, Royal Light Grey, Flat Aluminium, Gun Metal, Dark Iron, Clear Red, Clear Green and Revell Aluminium Enamel when I ran out of Tamiya.

Washed with Flory Dark Dirt, a mix of Flory Grey and Ultimate White.

Oil work with various Windsor & Newton and Abteilung 502.

Finished with Windsor & Newton Matt and Satin varnishes.

Rigged with Uschi Van Der Rosten Fine Rigging.

Fantastic job Alistair! What an epic build in the end and one to take great pride in, given how this one fought you at every step. I can't imagine that many modellers would've stuck with it given the circumstances, I know I certainly wouldn't have.

I've just had a lovely (if slightly triggering!) time reading back through the thread, actually having missed all the great work you did on the interior. I'm always amazed how your builds seem, to the outsider, to fly together flawlessly almost before I've noticed the WiP. This one is even more impressive in how you were able to get it to the finish despite the how stubbornly it refused to cooperate at any stage. I'd certainly say the result is well worth all that effort!

Cheers,

Andy

Well rescued Alistair and what a cracking model, great work and perseverance has led to a very impressive Sunderland in your display.   What a journey too.  Keep those thinners safe fella!!!😉

A joy to follow as always.

Thanks Andy,

although I'd say most of the problems were self inflicted.

Great job and you have a new nick name:  'The Come Back Kid".  🙂

Thanks very much bit I'd say closer to the Clitheroe Kid than comeback. :D.

What a ride it was Alistair, and like all the best rides, the finish was worth the journey.

Thanks Mark both for your kind comment and your encouragement when all seemed lost.

Superb save and we’ll worth the effort to get this great result. You’re a better man than me I would have kicked it up and down my garage and probably bounced the airbrush off of a couple of walls before crying in the corner like a little girl 😂

Thanks so much,

I came very close to that on more than one occasion.

In spite of all the odds you were facing your efforts yielded off. The result is excellent. This Sunderland is looking outstanding!

Many, many thanks.

That is extremely kind of you.

A beautiful recovery, Alistair!  I have one in the stash and I can only hope my finished results turn out half as good as yours did.

Scott

Thanks so much,

I'm sure yours will be miles better and hopefully the build thread will help avoid some of the pitfalls.

Cheers,

Alistair
