Airfix 1/32 Beach Buggy +++Finished+++

Here it is in all its glory. The moulds have obviously fared very well - it looks like a lovely little kit. Hoping to try out some Tamiya lacquers on this one, and have enlisted the help of a dehydrator to speed up the drying process of the paint. It'll be a Great Escape option this time around, hopefully start early Saturday morning to get some paint on the body shell asap. 😀 Rubbing my hands in anticipation of another great Blitzbuild GB.

Looks great a kit I remember well as a kid.

Of late I’ve been using my heat gun to flash off layers of paint and so long as I rennet not to cook the plastic it’s pretty effective at speeding things up. I’ll have to do this on the peashooter to have a hope of getting the camo done.

Warning; slight hi-jack/off topic

I have a small desk 'angle-poise' type lamp with a halogen spot light bulb in it. I use the heat from that to speed up paint drying. I leave the lamp head at a fixed distance and just put the parts under it and leave them

That would be dangerous in my hands I reckon. 🤪

I'll report back in the thread about how it works - probably daft trying new paints and drying ideas in a Blitzbuild, we'll see. 🤨

Well I did manage to melt the cowling of my P47 :( but I have gotten the hang of it now.

Lacquers typically dry faster than enamels, so there is that.  Tamiya acrylics dry pretty quick too...arguably too fast in some cases.  😄

Early on Saturday morning will reveal all. If it doesn't work out a quick change to a little Revell Millennium Falcon might be in order. 😃

Gave it a run out earlier, and the lowest temp. it will run at is 35 degrees C. Should be ok.

Oooo nice.
pink primer?

Tamiya reckon their lacquers don't need any primer, so it's straight onto the plastic - I can't quite believe that myself - we'll see. 🧐

Made a start - the spraying didn't go too well. There was a bit of spatter, probably didn't thin the paint enough, and the pressure was too low. Anyhows, it went into the dehydrator, and it was on 35 degrees for 30 minutes - we'll see in the morning if it has helped it dry. Quite like the colour though, so that's a plus. Also had a little go at starting the engine pieces, but it's time for bed I reckon. More tomorrow 🙂.

Morning session done. The paint was dry - though not sure it was anything to do with the dehydrator, the Tamiya lacquer flashed off very quickly anyway. Also think that a primer would have benefited, as it needed a wet sand before applying another coat. Also started on the construction of the engine and floor pan - it really is a lovely little kit.

Lunch looms, 🙂, Session time =   1 hour 59 minutes Total time =  3 hours 26 minutes

Afternoon session done. Lovely, grilled halloumi pittas for luncheon. The body shell has improved - reckon it will need another two or three coats to refine it. Letting it have a good dry before having another sanding session on it later.

Started going through the other bits, mostly simple, but the chassis & gubbins underneath are quite nicely detailed. I haven't decided whether the figures will get a showing in this GB.

Music has been some '94 compilation thing - mostly not my kind of stuff and a Stiltskin offering - remember them?

Session time =   1 hour 12 minutes Total time =  4 hours 38 minutes

Another mini-session - getting towards a spraying session, to get some black on the chassis, engine, and tyres. I like this kit a lot. Here are the figures as well - nicely moulded, and I think I'll make the effort to do them. My children got me a Redgrass wet palette for Father's Day, so it would be a chance to test it out.

Session time =  1 hour 20 minutes,  Total time =  5 hours 58 minutes

Yes I’m afraid I do…

The bug looks good so far.

I think one of the tricks of spraying cars is to give it a final wet coat, ie when you’ve added airbrush cleaner into the cup ( I use windolene btw) give the paint a few passes with the cleaner/paint mix and it will help the finish.

Supper was lentil shepherd's pie with carrot and broccoli. Quick pic to start the session showing the lovely engine detail - not bad for a 1971 mould. Had to put a late one in, to get some black on the sub-assemblies, and the body had another thin coat. Went up to a 0.5mm needle, and both the black and orange sprayed a little better, with no spatter. Not bothering with the dehydrator to see how it looks in the morning without it. 🤔

Session time =  2 hour 10 minutes,  Total time =  8 hours 8 minutes

Frank Cooper's Oxford on toast for brekkie - food of the Gods!

Everything looked ok this morning - the body needed a quick polish to smooth down a few defects though.

Compressor then packed up, but I've got a little spare one that was cheap on eBay - phew.

Some of the parts, (tyres/seats), were given a coat of Nato Black + Black to create a satin finish, some parts had a silver coating, and the body had another coat, though this time using the retarder thinner to let the finish smooth down, hopefully. 🙂 Into the dehydrator we go!
