Bless my soul it’s a Fairey Firefly in 1/48 by Trumpeter

they do get more pronounced during flight but on the ground not so much.

But not as dips, the air pressure above the wing in flight is lower so tends to "suck" the fabric up leaving the ribs as the low point!

I think the idea that fabric should show ridges is, as Troy says, down to the early kit manufacturers.

Prototypes had all sorts of things, which is why they are prototypes.   No pylons are in your reference photo,  so I'd fill them, but they likely were set for underwing stores.

Aesthetically,  I'd say leave them off, as it will show off the aircraft lines better.

Note the standard sized roundels I was going on about.

52363651283_aa17e3f404_b.jpg

Also, the just visible serial is small, probably 4 inch (so just under 2mm high in 1/48th)    as seen on the decals above, can you make Z1832... well the is 183 above.   I can't see on the photo, but it's likely

note, this

https://www.hlj.com/1-48-scale-fairey-firefly-mk-i-early-nf-2-azm06395

AZ kit has these decals, though, again, the roundel proportion are wrong.... and the serial  lettering look wrong style as well.

azm06395_6.jpg?v=

note, to add to the decals sent by Chris,  either paint in the red roundel centre, or use one of these you have

52311205169_ac369a125d_b.jpg

Ah, I now note the Trumpeter sheet has "Royal navy Z1832"  decals which look OK.    You still need the fin flash, but that is a standard marking, available in many kits.

9.3%!!!!!  Not surprised.   I surprised you can see anything to today though.....

That’s some great advice and super informative. Thanks @Troy Smith again you supply the goods. 😀

Johnny, would these be of any use to you?

Roy was selling them off at the Nationals some years back and I bought a few packs for Sea Furies etc.

Ironically, I don't have any Firefly kits!

Yours gratis. Drop me a PM if interested with your address

Enjoying your build - great problem-solving and painting skills

A pound!!!! What a bargain. Thank you so much for the offer but look what I had printed while you were writing that kind offer.

Very very kind but I have some now. I’m sure they will find their way to a good home.  ❤️

Good evening. 😀

Thank you all for your kind words and indeed more offers of parts for my little build. 🤩 I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you bunch don’t arf warm the cockles. 😇

while I have been away some resin action has been going on.

First of I spent a bit of time 3D modelling some bits that I needed:
Wheels, cannons, vent covers, wing lamp and some nose vents.

52421246380_442feacd19_b.jpg

After a little while in the resin bath I got the booty.

52421312823_32c65d12de_b.jpg

After a bit of sanding of support stubs they turned out ok.

52420802526_2347abe01c_b.jpg

A lot better than the kit offerings. 😃

The other bits look ok too.

The vent covers even had the wires modelled. They turned out better than I expected.

52420289287_db254fcb93_b.jpg

The Hispano cannons. ( Is that right? )

If you zoom you can see the little spring.

52421246125_3f6a06c516_b.jpg

And the wing lamp. Which is loads better than the kit offering as there wasn’t one. 😫😲

52421085514_b82d9dd750_b.jpg

I had to share this. Looks like a couple of resin monsters looming from the gloop.🧟‍♂️

52420802661_c5d4474986_b.jpg

The nice vents I printed so I get the same arc on each side,

52420802566_b968f5b738_b.jpg

Then I sanded and added sprue goo and sanded again.

52420289432_dc79a22a19_b.jpg

Then blasted with a spot of primer.

52421085414_0f8c068ba5_b.jpg

Not bad. Maybe a tad more sanding but the shape is ok for me.

Well that’s that for this update.

Thanks for dropping by, have yourselves a splendid week and as always all comments welcome.

Your 3D printing is producing some outstanding results there Johnny! Excellent work on those parts.

Your wheels look really good - the hub detail and tread pattern is astonishing. I'm pleased to see that you're sorted in that department.

Excellent job on the new parts Johnny. Especially the wheels and the grating. Thin rods are always problematic. I learned that keeping anything over a diameter of 200um threshold  very rarely failed to print, under that and it was a 50-50 roll of the dice.

The landing lamps are lovely, I'd recommend getting one of these pens to paint the chrome bit (the paint can be decanted from the pen). I'm looking forward to seeing them built :)

You mentioned using sprue goo for the vents: is that effective on resin too?   TIA

these look superb.... for a late Mk.I or  Mk.IV

Note the barracudacast ones are 5 spoke and smooth.

this is captioned as Fairey Firefly F.I Z1908 ,  5 spoke and smooth....

firefly5.jpg

In the case of Spitfires, the 4 spoke were stronger, and could take a greater load,  5 being replace by 4 spoke is also seen on the Hawker Tempest.  I assume the same for the Firefly.

Block tread become more used with the wider use of concrete runways.

yes.

Hispano Mk.II,   the Mk.I had flat coils.  what was fitted to what is one of my Hurricane questions,  as both are, but seems the Mk.II became the common type as the war went on.

They were hulking great guns as originally designed as 'motor cannon'

they got  rework and the Mk.V as used on the Tempest was more compact.

this looks basically correct

Lovely 3-D printing work....  :goodjob:

Wow, those 3D wheels are incredible! I mean, the rest of the parts are incredible too, but for some reason the wheels stand out to me.  Nice job on that little nose intake too -- beautiful!

Thanks. Wheels are quite easy to reproduce s they’re round. The tread is more problematic but I find it’s getting them to print that is my only set back. Figuring out supports and what orientation is not my strong point.

Rise and shine. Beautiful Autumn morning out there.

A lovely and strangely relaxing weekend.

It was my daughters sixteenth birthday. (Yesterday) birthdays get easier as they get older. 🙃

Also my father in-laws seventy sixth. We went to see a pink Floyd tribute act in Kidderminister on Friday. Cor the town hall in Kiddy is awesome, small but beautifully formed.

52431378304_9933dd4395_b.jpg

The band were really good too. The female vocalist on the dark side tracks was especially fantastic!

52431620283_ec2f8ffccb_b.jpg

Any hoo. I guess you’re here for the fly and not my life story. 😉

As the house got cleaned on Friday I had most of Saturday to myself so…..

Here is a shot of the kit wheel and the new one side by side. I kept with the four spoked option but am more happy now I know why that’s to @Troy Smith’s excellent info Bank. 👌

52431378024_b86924d3ef_b.jpg

I couldn’t put off the masking any longer so.

52431104726_fb313a80b2_b.jpg

Not too bad really.

I added some extra little details before closing up. Wires in the rear.

52430597842_3f3f28c609_b.jpg

And the gun sight got its glass/Perspex added along with some light weathering to my printed part.

52430597852_b533e9965d_b.jpg

I decanted some silver from my molotow pen and painted the new lamps. (Always good to have a spare. ❤️

52431377999_e317cf3d71_b.jpg

And then popped in place.

52431104671_01dc7b3f3c_b.jpg

Then covered for all time with the clear bit. Jeez I must have lost this part about six or seven times while gluing on. I aware at one point I felt like a magician doing sleight of hand. I just did some kind of little shuffle while losing grip focus and POP! Gone! 😭😩

Twenty minutes later to no avail I gave up and luckily decided to check the turn up on my jeans. Yup, there it was. 🤣

So here it now stays. Phew.

52430597862_5dc6dc9623_b.jpg

Things are getting dangerously close to paint. canopies on with Gators grip and sprayed the internal colour.

52430597622_ab570aaae0_b.jpg

And tail stuck in place.

52431556145_12f52d7cc1_b.jpg

I’ll fit the positioned flaps after the fact.

52430597617_d61df21f12_b.jpg

Holes filled with goop and wells and vents masked. (Yes I have masked the vent) 😉

52431104926_f346715339_b.jpg

The little tail wheel got glued and a bit of goo added to fill a slight sink hole.

52431556325_2f97ea7ec9_b.jpg

I clipped off the bits and bobs and added them to the styrene of anticipation.

52431105051_7aa8093ebf_b.jpg

All this stuff will get primed soon and I can get on with the paint.

still have the spinner and the UC to build but that’s it. Came together all of a sudden. 🤩🤩

Thanks for dropping by. I hope you’re having a nice relaxing weekend too.

Happy modelling chums.

Johnny.
