Will find myself an ocean, Sail into the blue - Trumpeter 1/32 Fairey Swordfish MK.I

Ali, I don't want to be the bearer of bad tidings but I think Trumpeter have made the same booboo that I got pulled up for when I pimped up the old Airfix one a few years ago. The exhaust ring is pretty heavily segmented. As I understand it, this is a feature of the modern restored flying example only, the wartime ones having smooth unsegmented exhaust rings. If you take a look at the navywings site and watch the video, you can see at 6:53 that the modern one has a segmented exhaust ring, and then at 8:14 you can see a similar shot of a wartime one with no segments.  I'm working this weekend so I can't dig out anything more solid I'm afraid.

Anyhow, that's information for you. Up to you what you do with it. Mine's still got the segments on it...

Looking super (and big) though, segmented or not!

Regards,

Adrian

Thanks Adrian,

Nothing that can't be sorted.

Cheers,

Alistair

After Adrian pointed me in the right direction I did some sanding to get rid of the ridges.

While I was at it I finally got round to putting the top centre wing together along with some photo etch.

And a dry fit minus the windscreen.

Looking more and more swordfishy every time you post Alistair.  Looking good with the PE popping details and moving inexorably towards paint.

I had a look at my swordfish’s cowl and mine appears to have been a prototype new-model segmented version fresh from the factory… 🤦‍♂️

Thanks Mark, it's crawling towards some paint.

Great progress Alistair,  certainly is a major booster getting the centre section trial fitted.  Looking good.

Chris

Thanks Chris, I needed to make some sort of move forward instead of procrastinating and just trying to plan things out.

Nice work Alistair - big milestone getting that centre section in place, even as a dry-fit!

Thanks Roger.

I'm going to try and get the windscreen fitted and the undercarriage legs built today.

Fair bit of PE to go on the legs though.

Alistair

I made a restart on the Collector Ring.

I'm not sure what happened but there appears to be a bit of something going on.

By a happy accident in Natural light it looks really good. So I might just leave it.

I still need to mask up and get the unburnt bit done.

And in other news I have made a start on the wings.

Great to see the U/Clegs go on Alistair and the collector ring back again, looks good.

The ribbing looks very prominent on the wings.

Great work

Chris

Thanks Chris,

Now that you mention it it does look very prominent.

I'll see what it's like with paint on and whether it need filling a little.

Awesome stuff Alistair,  it does seem to take an age to get to paint on the Swordfish,  even on the 72nd scale kit.

You are doing well and will soon be painting.  Looking forward to more .

Great work

Chris

Thanks Chris,

Its' getting all the bits built up in subassemblies so I can get on with it.

Cheers,

Alistair

The PE is painstakingly detailed and delicate work but pays huge dividends to the finished look.  You’re doing a very fine job of it and ultimately we’ll all reap its benefits when we see it finished.

Thanks Mark,

That's the reason I'm taking my time as I want to get everything right and looking good.

It's me, though, so I'll stuff something up.:D

I decided to give the Exhaust Collector Ring and the exhaust a bit more work.

After a light sanding back to smooth and a few misty treatments with Xtreme Metals Pale Burnt Metal/Jet Exhaust mixes.

I'm more pleased with this.

I just need to mask off the ring and put some bare metal down.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, it's been a while.

Some paint has been wafted towards plastic.

I've been away in the heat of the Kalahari for a couple of weeks, playing catch-up with the builds I am following. You are up first Ali, the PE additions are starting add a sparkle to the airframe. My 72nd build was a stalled for the same reason, so back to it this weekend, provided MotoGP and rugby don't get in the way!

Nice to see you back safely.

I'll keep moving along slowly with this one.

Them pesky seams Alistair, gets to us all....

Still, all taking shape quite nicely.

Stay safe.

Simon.

Thanks Simon.

It's just a wee bit more work.

It'll get there.
