Thanks Roger,

I need to make a wee change to it though.

The engine gear casing should be painted a semi-gloss black, not silver>

Chris

Thanks very much for that Chris,

Great progress Alister. And such rapid progress as well.

Thanks very much,

It'll all slow down a bit as I'm back at work for a stint.

Hi Alistar,

That is coming along nicely, looking more 'Stringbag' each time I view your progress. Nice detail on the engine, can almost hear someone say 'contact!'

Watching and learning,

Kevin

Thanks so much.

Keep an eye out as you'll probably learn what not to do. ;)

Cheers,

Alistair

Hi Alistair,

Ha, ha, thanks.

Truth is probably, do what I do, but do it better like Alistair!

Nice work - you are giving me Pegasus guilt! I might throw some paint at mine whilst working on the P38 today,

It's all looking superb.

Does everyone paint their Bristol crank cases silver just to wind up @dogsbody? (I know I do :wicked:)

I was a bit taken aback by "about as big as the Sunderland" though! I can do the maths but I didn't realise what "two and a quarter times as big as the Airfix one" looks like in the flesh plastic.

Adrian

Thanks Adrian,

That sounds like a fun game. We should certainly remember that one. ;)

Hey! So I'm a bit anal-retentive. Cut me some slack!

The missus uses the more vulgar term A$$#@LE to describe me. What a mean ol' woman she is!

I've not forgotten about this one.

Although I've spent the last week planning the painting of the Collector Ring.

I tried a burnt umber base coat but that wasn't working.

So, after another three attempts I finally went with a Flat aluminium base coat then Xtreme Metals Burnt Metal, followed by a misting of a 50/50 mix of Burnt Metal and Jet Exhaust and a final misting with a few drops more of Jet exhaust.

And unmasked.

It's a fair bit darker without the flash effect and once it's in place with some further weathering it should all blend in.

Thanks for looking,

Looking good Alistair , should look great on the cowling with the engine in too.

Great job

Chris

Thanks Chris,

I'm hoping they will fit together without too much fettling.

Looks good Alistair.  I remember similarly obsessing about how to paint the collector ring on mine

Thanks Mark,

had a read through of your travails with it and went with your Burnt Umber base but I only had an acrylic oil burnt umber and I just couldn't get it to work in the way I wanted.

So, went to Xtreme Metals instead knowing I could mix them together.

I think it turned out ok.

Alistair

Wonderful, I love the Swordfish.   Brilliant work so far Alistair, I wonder how much commonality there is with the IIIF I have in 1/32 to build.

Keep up the awesome work buddy

Anthony

Thanks Anthony,

That is very kind of you.

Alistair

This is such an enjoyable and fantastic project to watch. And sharing a few tips and tricks on the way. Thankyou Alistair  👍

Thanks so much.

That is very kind but I've nicked most of these ideas from the internet, so can't take any credit.

I like to try and show everything from disasters to successes in the hope that it will help somebody else not make the same mistakes as me.

Cheers,

Alistair

Ali, I don't want to be the bearer of bad tidings but I think Trumpeter have made the same booboo that I got pulled up for when I pimped up the old Airfix one a few years ago. The exhaust ring is pretty heavily segmented. As I understand it, this is a feature of the modern restored flying example only, the wartime ones having smooth unsegmented exhaust rings. If you take a look at the navywings site and watch the video, you can see at 6:53 that the modern one has a segmented exhaust ring, and then at 8:14 you can see a similar shot of a wartime one with no segments.  I'm working this weekend so I can't dig out anything more solid I'm afraid.

Anyhow, that's information for you. Up to you what you do with it. Mine's still got the segments on it...

Looking super (and big) though, segmented or not!

Adrian
