Ray S
Hello all, I have just finished the Airfix HM Bark Endeavour, 1768. This kit was given to me by my son as a birthday present last year. I had also been given one back in 1966 or thereabouts, but as I was only a nipper at the time, I was unable to build it, and my Dad (who, along with Mum, had given it to me) had that pleasure. I remember it fondly, possibly inaccurately, as being moulded in a Cadbury's Dairy Milk-coloured plastic. This version was more Caramac (you may have to look that up!). This time though, I was just about up to the task. There is a build thread here: I had a lot of help and advice, and my nautical vocabulary improved more than somewhat because of that, for which I am truly grateful. I certainly found that at the moment I have limits in what I can achieve, but hopefully that will improve. Certain tasks which I found awkward at the beginning started to get easier as I went along (except knots!). Anyway, enough waffle, this is what I ended up with: I have read that this kit is a reasonable representation of Endeavour, but for the really skillful can be the basis of a great model. I had no intention of improving and amending it, but just built it for the sheer joy of it. That is all for now, thanks for looking, Ray PS My next project will be a revisit to a model I started some time ago, but it has languished a bit. It still has sails, along with a boiler, and there is a build log on here which needs reviving.

I will be clearing my workbench and trying to find the bits and pieces I had previously built for the next ship. I know they are around somewhere! 14 hours ago, dnl42 said: Nice work on that! Thanks everyone for the looks, likes and comments. Ray
Bertie McBoatface
This is a very neat and tidy build of an ancient kit. I know the build wasn't without its problems and frustrations but well done on working through them so well.

I have a Monogram Cutty Sark in the stash and was intending to build her with sails (my only other sailing ship Drake and Grenville's Revenge has them) but after seeing what your build here looks like I might consider leaving the masts and yards bare. 23 hours ago, Ray S said: just built it for the sheer joy of it. Rule no.1 in my book. She's very well done. Regards, Jeff.

As for leaving the yards bare, that is a difficult one. Personally, I prefer no sails if the ship is on a stand, especially if they are vac-formed, but Jon ( @Faraway) did wondered with injection-moulded sails on his Kogge so they can look great. The other issue is that often the yards will be in a different place compared to where the manufacturer intends them to go, as they are frequently lowered. I chose to ignore that with this one. Thanks for the very kind comments Jeff. Ray
Tim Reynaga
That's a clean, neat build of a less than perfect kit. Nice! 🙂

Gidday again, yeah that's often the case, the bare yards lower until the sails are bent on, then raised. But other than the sailors of old who's going to know? 😁 Besides you and me of course. But regardless of where the yards are or should be, your model looks great. Regards, Jeff.

I chose to ignore that with this one. I like the 'bare poles' style of ship model. It shows off the rigging and the structure of the ship in a formal and traditional way. Of course, I also like the idea of a model with full sails heeling in a choppy sea, but that is so very hard to do well.
