PKZ-2: WW1 Helicopter !

Recommended Posts

This was brought on a whim; I’d never heard of it but liked the quirkiness.

PKZ- 2 artillery observation platform / helicopter

Roden 1/72

Its an experimental Austro-Hungarian replacement for observation balloons it flew a few times in the spring of 1918 before being shelved.

interesting build,  quite fiddly and difficult to line things up - rigging was shall we say challenging.

Quite pleased with the end result though

Speaking as someone who has a passing familiarity with helicopters, I can see a few areas where the safety aspects don't quite meet modern standards! Bonkers, bordering on Steampunk - nicely done.

That sir, is a masterclass in understatement! I'm not seeing any controls in the basket. Given the wiki description it looks like the altitude control was via winching from the ground tethers. Presumably the engines were started externally as well and ran at a constant throttle setting. Yikes...

Speaking of masterclasses, this model is surely one in fine and exquisite detail work! Absolutely stunning,
