NASCAR. Buying kits.

Hey all.

Am a returning modeller (2 yrs), currently building  a flight of Spitfires but I also used to build NASCAR's.

I have about twenty of them, even the Revell ASA'S.

So I want to build them again, but where are you builders buying your kits?

There are UK shops with diecast, but no plastic 1/24 self build.

I have viewed Mikesdecals, $42 postage for two $15 kits. A bit steep!

In the 90's I used to buy from Model Shop Harrow and Carkits. Who are (if any) the specialists today?

No idea about NASCAR kits, but I mostly trawl Ebay, or buy from Dave Coley's Emporium, Jadlam or Jumblies...   I used to buy kits from the US, but postage costs have rocketed in the last couple of years.

I sold off most of my NASCAR kits (actually to Carkits IRC!) but still have a pile of decals. I recently decided I'd like to build some of the subjects on the sheets so had a look on ebay UK, there were a few AMT and Monogram kits listed but I didn't buy any at the time as I had a few too many other kits 'in progress' at the time.

There are some AMT's listed now, but the prices are a bit ambitious IMO

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/220/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=AMT+nascar&rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=1

There are some better priced Monogram 1/24 here;

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/220/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=AMT+nascar&rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=1

There's also a more recent manufacturer, Salvinos J R models who I think both rebox other manufacturers kits and also produce their own moulds, but I'm not 100% on that. They recently produced a new generation Mustang.

Hannants stock some of their kits;

https://www.hannants.co.uk/search/index.php?adv=1&product_category_id=&product_division_id=&manufacturer_id=363060&product_type_id=&code=+&scale_id=&keyword_search=&setPerPage=25&sort=0&search_direction=0&restore_search=&save_search_active=yes&save_search_name=&save_search=

Also on ebay

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=salvinos+JR+models&_sacat=220&LH_TitleDesc=0&_odkw=monogram+NASCAR&_osacat=220&LH_PrefLoc=1

Again, prices are too rich for me!

It's worth setting up a search for those manufacturers on ebay UK, as there's a fair chance cheaper ones will get listed now and again.

HTH

Thanks all for the replies.

Have checked out all the above shops, no luck for my price limit. AMT's at £45?

I still have their Zerex 7 to build so may break it's seal, finally after 32 years.

But I am seeing that the average price for a 1/24 kit in UK is £30 without the postage.

When did that happen!

Buying from the States does'nt seem expensive after all.

Have just ordered decals from the Slixx store to renovate an ugly 26 Cheerios Ford Taurus and I still have a Monogram Lumina shell for a Meinecke livery so I should build this old stash first and save money.Ha!

Just watch out for custom's charges. I don't know what the rules are now on the amount you can bring in but they used to be quite low. Just always hoped they wouldn't pick up on the parcel!

That's always my 'plan' too! :)

I’ve ordered the new gen Camaro from Spotmodel, they have other Salvino JR kits at much more sensible prices delivered UK.

Viewed Spotmodel, no NASCAR but what an amazing shop for auto kits.

I have been scouring euro shop sites, Axel'smodellbau in Germany and BSmodels in Belgium for large auto collections.

In Holland there is a Farmmodels, agricultural kits only and nowt else.

The Dutch love their farming.

Thought you might like this picture.. I think it's about a '64 Dodge Coronet.

Early last month there were at least half a dozen NASCARkits on the bay at less than ten pounds each. Search used model kits regularly.

That was about the average when I looked recently Pete - I couldn't believe it yesterday when someone's asking nearly £50 for old AMT kits - but I guess they're trying to match the prices of re-issued AMT stuff on Hannants...!! :)

Most of my NASCAR kits were bought off eBay a few years ago. There are a decent number on there at the moment.

Salvino's J R started producing their own 1/25 scale kits a few years ago and acquired the old Monogram 1/24 toolings after Revell's financial problems saw them sell off a lot of their old tools to Atlantis. Spotmodel do have them in several an stock but I'd imagine they're not big sellers this side of the pond.

I might have bits around, I was big into nascar until Earnhardt died then it got boring for me. It's to bad you can't get to some model shows in the U.S. I saw some recent videos of the selling tables and they have lots for as little as $5, guess nobody wants them.

Now that's interesting!

I was going to ask in the Wanted forum for unbuilt or built models. 1989 to 2002

If built, bodyshells can be repainted and their chassis I have if none available.

I saw a couple videos from recent model shows of the youtuber walking through them and they had piles of them. I have no idea how to get ahold of these without being there. If you can find a lot with cheaper shipping then you might have a good chance of making your collection. Just keep looking, something has to turn up. I know shipping isn't your friend. I know the cars you are looking for. I think the last ones I had I gave to my friend who is disabled just for something to do.

Update on this.

After 4 months, Spotmodel's distributor decided they wouldn't or couldn't supply them with next-gen Salvinos.

So as far as I can see Salvino have no worthwhile distribution outside N America, so it's a case of ordering from there and playing Russian roulette on USPS and customs/duty charges, even then probably still cheaper than the gouging from the big H or others purporting to sell in Europe (with honourable exception of Spot).

Spotmodel gave  me option of refund or anything else for similar price so I've no complaint about them.
