Italeri 1/72 F-15C...65th Aggressor Sq., Nellis AFB, 3/2014

Recommended Posts

I'm still on the fence regarding the livery.  I wanted to do the Israeli bird, but @stevej60 has his eye on that.  My very first glance pointed towards the 125th Air National Guard from Jacksonville, Florida...and, indeed, I might do that.  There seems to be plenty of non-USA aircraft happening here.  Funnily, the instructions say they were based in the Netherlands in 2015...true or not, mine will be based in Florida.

Box art...

Sprue looks good.

I'll get into at after the weekend.  I need to put some things behind me.  I have until October anyway...

Yikes!  That's a flashy one for sure.  I'll either make the Aggressor or the FNG.

Was my original idea about the Japanese GB. I still may build that one after all :D

Nice!  Too late for one, in time for the other.  It could have been a 'crossover' (even though they aren't allowed...)

I'll make my decision as I build...

Welcome aboard John, those aggressor’s come in multiple schemes. Should give you options in case someone wants to do the same unit.

Thanks.  I'll find some images...

Deployment for an excercise

Thanks @alt-92.  And I actually saw the Frisian Flag mentioned on the FANG wiki page but I didn't investigate.  That's a neat link too.  Make me want to build a Finnish Hornet.  Next time.

  • John Masters changed the title to Italeri 1/72 F-15C...65th Aggressor Sq., Nellis AFB, 3/2014

Will you do the Blues or another set of colors with this pattern ? Here are a couple of variations, I know there is a black/grey scheme in this pattern and I believe also a green ?

I do like the detail on this kit so far.  The fit is tight, although there seems to be slight bits of flash here and there...

Hmmm...not sure about the decals, or at least not all of them.  The detail is intricate and to get a small decal to settle down into all those any spaces seems impossible.  I'll probably do a combo of paint and decal.

The pieces...

There was some flash on the tub...

I'll give the cockpit some Medium Sea Grey as primer, the ejection seat all black, the IP black too.  Then I'll pick out areas with the hairy brush.  This will look good with the canopy open, I think.  I'll examine the decal question once that is all dry.

So I missed couple of photos...

I'm happy with it.  Test fit of the upper and lower fuselage halves show that it will be a little tricky and might benefit from some 'spot welding' with CA to get all the edges lined up.  But that's later...

Good morning.  It's so crowded and busy here on the island this week.  I avoid the crowds and stay inside.  Plenty to do at home.

I could care less about the religious holiday.

I buttoned it up and really needed to take care with aligning the edges on the fuselage halves.

After a couple of hours I looked at this...

52284169978_a22e71e980_c_d.jpg

...and I don't need to trim these off...

52284161971_265757fdf1_c_d.jpg

assembled the intakes...they required some jockeying to get straight since there are no pins.

52283183467_0f420bdf0e_c_d.jpg

This is backwards, by the way.  The pins for the fins are different and match up to either one side or the other.

52284429959_ab30b73a5c_c_d.jpg

There are not the same...

52284162151_34d8f30138_c_d.jpg

But they go on alright.

The wings are assembled and drying...

52284429979_e47453c598_c_d.jpg

19 and 20 are supposed to be able to swing, but the gap was too much so I adjusted it.  Too much, it seems.  I can add some PPP eventually and lessen the gap a bit.

52284170148_999c3b8fbc_c_d.jpg

The other side is better.

52284161986_34b957334a_c_d.jpg

Just a comparison with the F-5...The F-5 is very small.

52284162051_35539ea816_c_d.jpg

Gaps in the wing roots.  They are consistent on the underside too.  PPP.

52284170063_5e9da681c0_c_d.jpg

However, with the nose on and the wings all attached, it's beginning to look like the thing itself.

More today...

PPP did the trick...

52285315749_4dbf68b729_z_d.jpg

52285056418_ece3c6770b_z_d.jpg

These will need filling too...

52284072157_6cce528b3f_z_d.jpg

Then I did this...

52285050161_88abc8ccdd_z_d.jpg

Which looks good.

52285050211_a46c64680a_z_d.jpg

And then I looked ahead...landing gear, armaments, canopy...not much else for building.  So I gave the landing gear and inner doors some white primer.

What kind of filler is PPP?

Perfect Plastic Putty.  I think it's a UK product.  I found it on Amazon.  I like it.  Shrinkage is minimal and application with a cocktail stick or small flat coffee stirrer works fine.  And it doesn't smell.
