GWH Special Paint Schemes boxing

Recommended Posts

While my modelling set up is packed down for a house move, what else is one gonna do but surf for new kits right? 🤷‍♂️

I shouldn't really, I struggle to complete builds these days, but this little fella fell into the basket together with a couple of AM goodies (seats and ip)

spacer.png

No need to introduce the plastic it's a familiar kit in the GB,

but the markings are quite interesting with 5 lakenheath noseart schemes included:

391 FS, 366 FW 90-0237 / MO Ares 2018

391 FS, 366 FW 90-0233 / MO Guardian 2018
494 FS, 48 FW 91-1326 / LN Ravage October 2018

494 FS, 48 FW 91-0311 / LN Lady Liberty October 2018

and 494 FS, 48 FW 96-0204 / LN 2-Oh-40oz 2018

i might go for 'the guardian' perhaps

spacer.png

gonna make it a used dirty airframe, they all returned looking worn from their six month deployment.

this is my inspiration:

Oooo nice, you'll love it!!!

The GWH model is very nice model indeed, I've been pawing over mine and gee it looks nice, suspect it'll be quite similar to build as the Su-27 from them. If you haven't built one of theirs before, just test fit a few times before gluing, some bits will probably need to be in their exact place for everything to fit. Found that a couple of times, plus I had a wee bit of flash and poorish mould lines on the stores. But other than that, GWH stuff is much nicer to build than the stuff from other manufactures from that country for sure!!

I agree, very little AM stuff is required....can't believe I'm saying that!!! :wall:

thanks for the advice rich.

i built a gwh MiG 29 a year or two back and that was really nice, so I hope it's of the same level.

i was considering some reskit AM exhausts but they get expensive and the kits look good from what i can see online.

after moving house with my one wife, four kids and two hundred moving boxes: the work bench is back up and running again and it feels great to be back at it despite the break not being so long.

The F-15 got started today as a christening.

the box

the opened box and goodies

wow gwh really look after their missiles, beautiful they are but one of each of these is all i have?

relief removed from the relevant places ready for the quinta cockpit set here

OOOoooooo look at all that lovely AM stuff!!!!

.....and yes I am getting more for mine! :D

That's all the flying bang things you get!!!    Oh dear.......just don't forget that wee part #1 on the AIM-9X sprue.

I found the holes for the IP and sticks needed to be enlarged a wee bit to get them to fit nicely.........not helped in my case by accidentally cutting the locating tabs off the front IP!!

There are a few oddities in the build you will come across, but other than minor thing she builds up very quickly!!!

Thanks rich I think I'd have missed that actually. its not in the instructions strangely.

here it is added with some ak white primer thrown about.

52268627497_772a24276c_h.jpg

quite a lot of ejector pins on this kit - they should have put them on the other unseen non exposed side of the intake trunks

52269610923_dc2f694ede_h.jpg

sorted them for now with sanding and loads of self levelling thinners and primer, but after joining the join will need work.

52268627562_17f03c9284_h.jpg

the office bits all got light coats of tamiya sky grey, that seems to match the quinta set ok with the black base.

52270080795_befa5cd105_h.jpg

these were really tricky to put together, awkward engineering

52269590821_5baa8146d8_h.jpg

i goofed on this but it's straight forward to fix

it's ok, I'm going for the a-to-g loadout anyway

this is the loadout i intend to replicate

AM seats have had some mr surfacer black primer too

things are rolling along nicely.

my an F-15 is BIG in 1/48 isn't it?!

I had the exact same issues with the intakes as well.......some rude words were issued while assembling!!!  The intakes are poor with the injection marks.

One bit I will warn you about is the joins at the rear of the main fuselage, the side joins around the elevators is pretty poor and will need a bit of work to get right. The wing lower fuselage fit is very nice.

I think you have the petal-less exhaust cans, so I would seriously recommend buy a set of these!

Not the cheapest but really worth the money look wise, they'll be heaps better and easier to use!

they look amazing rich but are expensive. after assembling the kit parts (which are not bad) i'm now considering them as they radically lift the whole model.. 🤔

well sorry for my lack of updates and appearances.

life has been so hectic and busy and stressfull and i've had no time until this week to spend on modelling or visiting the site.

but had chance at the bench this week to progress so the f-15 got some love.

those quinta sets really are lovely.

52334105884_b70a698a2d_h.jpg

and here they are installed with the resin seats all finished too with some washes applied.

I put their height at what i considered roughly best from the cockpit external view from refs aligning the headrest with the frame.

and then she got sealed up

52332855327_2100c7d661_h.jpg

i worked forever on the intake seams heres a point near the end.

52333807571_b43a798eea_h.jpg

then i painted them white and the bottom lip on the fuselage medium gunship gray before installing.

52332854512_29c8635061_h.jpg

then added the lower wings

52333809126_2d6c874d30_h.jpg

lots of weights were added to be safe...

52334105124_788bdd1f6d_h.jpg

52334042198_9a4b14e78b_h.jpg

heres the other end of the engine dept as discussed above @trickyrich nice but not as nice as that AM

52334236910_1b28dc0089_h.jpg

this might be the biggest piece of plastic i've ever seen in a kit! 😳

52334105814_45a2383a50_h.jpg

i'm considering installing ailerons now when i join the upper and lower fuse/wings but have the flaps dropped and install later. so i may remove the tabs. this will allow easier sanding of the fuselage join i think. 🤔

52334237175_43419b0f4c_h.jpg

dry fit here -

52334105909_cefeb88dbe_h.jpg

so i got quite a lot done. it comes together quite quickly after the cockpit was done.

Awesome!  I've not had a chance to tear into mine yet.  Paint & cans showed up Friday so I'm good to go when I can get around to it.  Trying to get my Classic Monogram & Turning Japanese builds wrapped up.

Good move on leaving the flaps off until later, I had a shocker trying to sand round them. I've learned my lesson! Also looks like you done a great job on the intakes.

Just a note on the Quinta set, if you're modelling a jet from post 2012, the screen below the HUD mount in the front and on the lower right in the rear should be the LCD screens as opposed to the slatted LED types. Quinta provide both. Not very noticeable once you fit it to the cockpit mind you!

Thanks Dave. Thought the slatted type was correct for my aircraft from the instructions but I am a bit dim though. it’s a bit late now though but thanks for your expertise 👍

Had no time in my life for modelling unfortunately so have only managed a few bits, mostly assembly, together with filling and sanding, still a way to go. Its a bit rough right now, quite some finessing to go.

Looks good Paul. The seams at the rear are a pain in the backside, as I'm sure you've found!

Thanks Dave mate.

I'm still filling seams and sanding ad infinitum. this is the stage that usually kills my builds, build after build. but I'm determined to overcome it here.

some moron painted but misplaced this. 🤪

52379356879_64013ebbfb_b.jpg

so after literally hours of trying to find it, he gave up and jnstalled the other alternative incorrect kit part and trimmed the hud to fit.

as usual 30 seconds later it turns up in an obvious place. 🫣

Me too … I fond that If I get it to where it looks good I move on even if I have a ghost seam show up after paint. I try to compensate by make the uppers the most presentable and the bottom least. Who actually picks up someone else's models ?  Don't forget the stab’s will get mounted there and should cover much of that seam.

Yeah, those joins are/were a problem and do take some time to sort out.

That IP cover gave me grief as well (I wish I had lost it!!), it's a very tight fit with the front canopy and unfortunately something, either glue or liquid filler wicked up on the inside and left nasty masks on the inside!!!

Plus a word of warning with the decals, they are crap!!! Well mine were really thick and super matt! Even strong decals softening solution wouldn't make them conform! So be prepared!!!
