SU-27 UB Red 64

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Here is my work in progress SU-27UB build, this is my first work in progress post, all comments, critique and suggestions are more than welcome.

The kit I'm building is the HobbyBoss SU-27UB in 1/48 scale, I am going for the "Red 64" build, pre overhaul so from between 1990 to 2008. I have used a few extras, Quinta studio interior 3D decals, a metal pitot tube from master and new ware mask set for canopy and engines.

Here is the actual aircraft I intent to recreate.

The cockpit went together a treat and the detail the Quinta studio decals provide is exemplary, I will definitely be purchasing more of these for my larger/modern aircraft builds in the future.

The aircraft itself goes together very easily, there is only 5 or 6 steps to get to this point, some sanding was required on the intakes as a seem line was visable and the nose isn't quite level and this required some filling and sanding back, apart form these small errors the build is issue free.

I then primed the model in mr finished surface 1500, I didn't choose to do any pre-shading here as many of these aircraft seem to be kept in relatively good condition so I will weather the aircraft towards the end of the build and keep the paint job rather clean.

I then painted the top and bottom of the aircraft and masked up the model for the camo pattern, I decided for this build I will try MRP paints as they offer a wide range of paints for Russian aircraft and have a set specific for this aircraft, I used the 3 MRP paints from the SU-27 range and the darker blue from the SU-33 range as this seemed a appropriate fit. I masked up the camo myself and I am rather happy with the results. The MRP paints are exceptional, these along with AK real colours and Hataka orange line are now my new favourites.

I then moved onto painting the engines, I used a mixture of colours here. I first primes the surfaces in GX gloss black and then covered both sides in Super Metallic 2 fine Silver from Mr Color. I then masked over the panels with masking set. I then used a mixture of Alclad pale burnt metal and AK Xtreme duralium and titanium along with highly diluted clear blue and metallic blue, not to blow my own trumpet but I'm quite pleased with the results I am going to go over the engines with Tamiya weathering powders towards the end of the build.

This is where I am at right now, I am going to gloss over the enitre model with Mr Color clear and take it from there, this kit is a lovely kit and very good value for money I have both the GWH SU-27UB and SU-27 and they are about double the price, the detail is much better from the GWH kits but can I say its really worth the hefty price tag, I shall see when I have completed the GWH alternative, also the detail the HobbyBoss kit provides is amazing especially for its price. I am planning on doing GWH SU-27UB in the exact same aircraft, "red 64" but the ''overhauled'' version which is know as "red 100".

Kind regards
