Airfix 2023

Recommended Posts

As I could not find another topic on this subject of pure speculation, thought I would raise one.

No idea what to expect to come out of Kent in a red box.

Will we see a 1/350 QEC?

1/48 F35

1/72 Lincoln

personally I would like a new 1/48 Seaking kit, a 1/48 Venom, plus some 1/48 kits rescaled in 1/72 (Javelin, Sea Vixen etc) for those who have better eyesight and motor skills.

so please let the speculation begin 🤗

Thought I would make it a bit more interesting if I added a league table based on the number of suggestions. This a very crude cut of new tool suggestions and vintage classics. I will try and keep it updated regularly.  To make it manageable, it will only include new tools and significant modifications, not new boxings, or simple changes. I have created a simple spreadsheet and sorted them into vote order and only items that have received more than 1 vote are listed here (to save space). I have also combined some items i.e Venom/Sea Venom.

SCALE - Title - Votes

72 Javelin 8

72 Canberra B2 5

72 Lincoln 5

(by significant think 5/10/20/25/50/60/75/80/100 etc years)

Dambusters raid

Siege of Tobruk  Capture of Tripoli by Allied forces

Concord's first non-stop transatlantic flight.

To add to themes as above: Queens Coronation so something that took part at the RAF Review at RAF Odiham in 1953, Comet Airliner and I think the first S-55 Westland Whirlwind made its flight and entering the RAF. I think there is more along this line. ( And its my birth year).

PS Korean War cease fire?

I'd be happy enough if they got around to releasing the kits they announced for this year.  I pre-ordered three, only one of which was a new tool, and haven't seen any of them yet.

The siege of Tobruk was in 1941 so I'm not sure 2023 represents a significant anniversary.

That said, I'd like to see Airfix re-release their Matilda in the Vintage Classics range.

My thoughts for 2023:

1/72 Scale

Republic P47 Thunderbolt - new tool, to accompany their recent P40 and P51D

Gloster Meteor T7

De Havilland Venom - any mark

Consolidated B24 Liberator - new tool

Avro Lincoln

Avro Anson C19

Handley Page Hastings

Westland Whirlwind Helicopters - any marks - new tool

Bristol Belvedere HC1 - production variant - new tool

A man can dream, can't he?

1/72 F-35 and Texan 2… gotta have the RAF in 1/72.

New tool early Harrier family in 1/48 to the standards of the Buccaneer (British icon, Kinetic/Sword make no money for Airfix etc…)

Current standard Canberras in 1/72(first) and then 1/48.

1/48 Spey Phantom

Best,

M.

Conceded - mis-read/mis-quoted internet based source info, try capture of Tripoli by British/commonwealth forces from German forces.

Waiting with bated breath for the Anson - got a few Australian civil schemes drawn up already!

Hopefully in the pipeline:

In 1:72 - Javelin, Venom/Sea Venom, F.27, Catalina

In 1:48 - Meteor T.7 (Yeah, I know about the conversion sets - I want a proper injected one!), two hole Vampire.

My tuppence is definitely a yes for a Lincoln, an Anson C.19/C.21, a Javelin (new-mould), a Comet airliner, and a Hastings, all in 1/72nd scale. If I had to pick one, it would be the Lincoln.

Regards,

Jason

I had a brief online conversation a few weeks ago with Didier from Mach 2 and I suggested the Hastings as a future subject. He didn't rule it out, but said it may be a possibility in a year or so. Fingers crossed 🤞

Airfix just posted a tweet about their 2023 range to provoke discussion

My dream wishlist:

1/72 Vulcan B1/B1a - not practical based on current kit :(

1/72 early Vulcan B2 with narrow intakes (unlikely based on current kit)

1/72 Sea Vixen FAW.1

1/72 Short Sperrin (never going to happen form a mainstream manufacturer)

A new range of 1/144 kits

General wishlist:

1/72 Avro Manchester

1/72 Avro Lincoln

1/72 Sea Vixen FAW.2

1/72 Blackburn Buccaneer S.1 (don't think it's practical based on current kit)

1/72 Gloster Javelin

1/72 English Electric Canberra

Reissue of the 1/72 Nimrod with decent decals

What do I think is likely?

A 1/72 British Cold War jet. Probably a Sea Vixen FAW.2 or Javelin FAW.9

1/72 Manchester or Lincoln, both are often asked for and their relation to the Lancaster would make them good sellers IMO

Something with a propeller on the front in 1/48. Perhaps a FW190 or later Bf109 variant?

What other things are possible?

New decals for:

1/48 Bf109

1/72 Beaufort

1/72 Spitfire Vc

Maybe vintage reissue of the 1/72 Do17E/F

Likely the 1/72 Blenheim Mk.i will go because it says "last few" on the website (already got mine and built it :))

Vulcan rebox with decals for later schemes. Hoping if this happens that it would be a B2.MRR/K.2 box

Well it will be exactly 86 years since the BP Defiant first flew.

I'm sure Airfix will commemorate this auspicious occasion with an example in 1/24th 😀

I would be a most happy person if this came to be. As a Lancaster fan they are my favorite WW2 bomber but I do love the Lincoln and would be very ecstatic to build one.

I've just got the latest "Future Releases from Hannants. Included in it was this: https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/AVD7044

Does Avalon know something that we don't? I certainly hope so!

I think Azur have announced a Battle, so the decals are likely to be for that.

Airfix predictions:

1/72nd new tools

Harvard IIb (I know Special Hobby do a version, I just want one where I can't mess it up based on a poorly made cut)

Canberra B.2/6

Lightning F.1/3

Javelin

Meteor FR.9 (which looks likely, based on the F.8's sprue shots)

Hunter T.7

Lysander

Firefly FR.5

Venom FB.4

F-84F

1/48th

The aforementioned Bucc in the colours of the services that actually used it in anger...

My preference for the next Lancaster based plane to be done by Airfix would be the Manchester. We'd then have the complete set of the Whitley, Manchester and Wellington, and the Manchester would take up a lot less space than the considerably larger Lincoln.
