Next Italeri 1/12?

Recommended Posts

…no , I don’t have any info. But, musing on the upcoming Bugatti 35, I was thinking about what else might fit the themes they seem to be pursuing. Italian, not Ferrari (license too expensive?), classic race or rally car… My thoughts so far:

Alfa Romeo 158/9

Maserati 250F

Alfa Giulia GTA

Lancia Stratos

I’d buy any of them, naturally!

Best,

M.

Me too!  I'd also like to see more kits of classic '60s supercars that have been somewhat overlooked - the Lamborghini Espada, Iso Grifo, Maserati Quattro Porte and Ghibli, even the Monteverdi.  Beautiful cars but very rarely modelled.  I had to search for a long time before I found a Miura kit, they're rare enough.

I take your point about licensing Ferrari models.  Such a shame though, just imagine a 250SWB or a 250LM kit!

I think it depends how well the Delta Integrale has sold, @Vesa Jussila. If it’s proved there’s a market for more modern cars given the same treatment, then my money is on another one after the Bugatti — probably the Stratos. If it hasn’t, then they’ll stick to more vintage race cars, I reckon, in which case the 158/9 (possibly in two boxings) would be the most likely IMHO

best,

M.

I think the Nitto/Doyusha Stratos is still relatively easy to get hold of to justify a new kit, although perhaps they could acquire the tooling?

Other options could be an 037 or Delta S4, both available from MFH, but plastic would be cheaper. Also the 131 Abarth or Ford Escort would be interesting choices. I always thought a plastic 917 and 956/962 would be popular.  The would be lots of livery options to allow rereleases and after market supplies to generate further sales. If they are really adventurous, perhaps a Lancia LC2!

Having seen the real thing in the flesh at Goodwood, I think the Beast of Turin would fit in nicely with the Fiat racers. Particulrly if they could replicate the flames firing out from the bonnet.

italeri could very easily do a follow up to the 35B with a type 51. Virtually same car but with a twin cam engine.

Nice idea, although I think the pattern of the louvres in the body are different between the 35 and 51, but I'm sure it could be done.

Given the T35 and Alfas, I can't help but wonder if the next one will be something like a Mercedes-Benz SSKL, as that would fit very well with those others.

A 1:12 Bugatti T41 might be a bit big!

I guess the same could be said of their Alfas and the Bugatti.  I wonder if the Alfa, as the first of the new tooling ones was prompted by successful sales of the older tooling, ex-Esci 1:12s that Italeri reissued not so long ago, and presumably that has sold well too, hence the T35.  There is already a 1:12 Bentley, so the SSKL is probably the next most iconic sports racing car of that era that still has sufficient brand recognition today.

(I hasten to add that this isn't a wishlist as I don't build 1:12 - yet...)

Following on from my last post.  Another thought about a model that might also be a bit big that I think would really appeal.   A Duesenberg SJ Phaeton in 1/12th scale.

John Lambert mentioned that the louvers on the body of a Type 51 might be different to the Type 35.

Not sure about that John and you may well be right, but I will have a look at some pictures to see.

Come to think of it I have a feeling that the dashboard layout might be a bit different also.

I’m not sure the Doyusha Stratos IS that easy to get hold of; never having seen one I also don’t know how it compares as a kit to the Italeri Delta. But the usual “A Nitto Stratos makes no money for Italeri” argument applies… And I think it’s quite a big step, range-wise, to move away from _Italian_ icons.

Not sure what else is in the Protar 1/12 tool bank that’s NOT a Ferrari… I’d love the 312B if they brought that back with a Ferrari license, but I think that’s a dream.

Best,

M.

I think Bburago/Hot Wheels bought the Ferrari license for bonkers money a few years ago… certainly I remember hearing that there would be no more Revell or Tamiya Ferraris for the foreseeable. I won’t comment on Alphas licensing arrangements except to say that they are in a different league volume wise from mainstream injection plastic or diecast models…

best,

M.

They seem to be taking their time with the Bugatti release. Got one of their Delta's when they were on offer on Amazon, not started it yet but it looks a great kit.

Don't know if I'd buy at the current price hikes of them though

Yes I agree but I would love to see a kit of the Weinberger Type 41  cabriolet as it was originally built.

I think a lot of modellers would go for it.

TBH, they are big enough in 1:16th. I built a Bandai Binder Coupe de Ville a while back and it takes up a lot of shelf space!

The Weinberger is already available in 1:24/25 (think its originally a Lindberg tool) - I have one which will probably become an Esders roadster, to go along side an (as yet unbuilt) Italeri Coupe Napoleon.

The Duesenburg would be a lovely subject, but not convinced that it has the same name recognition as the already announced vehicles in the range.

A Stratos would go very nicely with the Delta.  Both road and rally variants could be easily released too.

Colin, even with current price hikes the 1/12th scale Italeri Bugatti would be much more affordable compared to the MFH kits. Having said that, there are many modellers out there buying MFH despite how expensive they are. I see plenty appearing on competition tables at various shows. Their subject turnout is quite prolific so there is a good market for their kits.

Paul, funnily enough I am currently building a chassis only model from the Bandai kit. Got it cheap a few years back as the body was wrecked in the kit. I built one complete back when it first came out and it makes quite an impressive model when finished. The bodywork hides how simplified and in places how inaccurate the chassis is now I am working on this one. The very basics are there and I am using the Wingrove drawings to correct and detail it. Bit of a long job. Lots of small bits to scratch build and a nice challenge building a chassis only model.

You are right, Lindberg did the Weinberger Bugatti Royale. They did it as it now appears after the Charles Chayne restoration and besides some extra bling added the colour scheme was completely changed from black to cream, and the wheel arch edges and body from from yellow to a shade of green. The upholstery was completely changed too and non original wheel trims fitted. One would have to rob a set of wheels from a 1/24th scale Italeri T41 to convert the Lindberg kit back to the car's original appearance. So it would be relatively easy to make it as original.

Its a good question.

I would love an Alfa 158/9, but for that reason alone I think they will not release it :D

I think they also know that there is a limited demand for the 1/12 kits, so they are only making them in small quantities, and which is why they are taking their time in releasing the Bugatti and the McLaren. (I base that on the fact that the 1/12 kits are often sold out on their website and it takes a while before they are available again)

Someday, I have to buy a 1/12 model myself as the highlight of the collection, but I do not yet know of what car.
